Illuminations

Illuminationsis a new portfolio fromMichael Reichmann. It is an edition limited to just fifty copies. The portfolio contains images taken between 2002 – 2004. Presented in a magnificent hand-made presentation case, it consists of twenty 13X19" prints, along with an artist statement and two pages of thumbnails, which consist of location information as well as situational and technical data on each image. Each print is separated by interleaving paper, and a pair of cotton gloves is provided.

From the Artists Statement

The images inIlluminationscover a period during which my travels took me to Iceland, Bosque del Apache, Yellowstone National Park, The Grand Canyon, White Sands, Big Sur, Zion National Park, and, of course, my native Ontario, Canada.

All of the photographs, except two, were taken with digital cameras or backs. In 2002 I was still in transition from using film to working exclusively with digital image capture. That change-over was completed in 2003. The advantages which digital imaging provides to the fine-art photographer include enhanced image quality as well as a more productive work-flow.

The prints in this portfolio were produced using pigment-based inks and printed on archival paper. Specifically, Epson Ultrachrome inks, using an Epson 4000 printer, on Entrada 190 Natural paper. This paper is 100 cotton rag, and contains no whiteners. Consequently, in combination with the pigment inks used, these prints should have archival properties equaling or exceeding those of any colour photographic process available to date.

The portfolio box was designed and produced by Don Taylor, Canada’s leading bookbinder, and the source for my earlierMonograph. The box is covered and lined with a gray linen fabric, and has a red linen padded interior.

This portfolio is one of a limited edition of just 50 pieces. Each print is individually signed, as is each portfolio itself.

These photographs are the core elements of a photographic exploration whose purpose is to capture the interplay between light and the landscape. The beauty of birds, and also the hand of man play a supporting role.

About the Photographer

Michael Reichmann is a fine art landscape photographer who has been practicing his craft for more than 30 years.

After working as a photojournalist for over a decade, he spent time in the computer software and telecom industries. But in the mid-1990s he returned to photography full time. His work has been shown in several gallery exhibitions, and is in numerous private and public collections.

Michael teaches photographic field workshops and seminars. During the first four years of this decade he has taught in Iceland, Tanzania, Canada, the United States, and Costa Rica.

Started in 1995, his web site,The Luminous Landscape, has grown to become the world’s premier education site for photographers, with more than a half million visitors per month. Michael is also Contributing Editor toPhoto Techniques Magazinein the U.S., and is a frequent speaker at industry conferences.

The camera equipment used in the production of these photographs include the Canon 1Ds, Pentax 67, Rollei 6008, and Contax 645 with the Kodak DCS Proback 645.
