I am long-time amateur photographer with a level of involvement that has waxed and waned over the past 30+ years. In the 1980s I was heavily involved in photography with two primary interests. Most of my time was spend on large-format landscape/nature photography, all black and white work. I became very adept at the zone system and printing, and I attended Ansel Adams' workshop in one of the last years he was an active participant. I also enjoyed urban street photography and could often be found roaming around with my trusty M3. During this period I won several awards and exhibited my work at two one-person and many group shows.

Around 1990 I found my interest waning, largely because of major changes in my personal life and also because I was less willing to spend long hours by myself in a smelly darkroom. I sold all my equipment and for the next decade and a half was a "family and vacations" photographer only.

About 2005 I started to see digital inkjet prints that had the quality required for serious photography work, and this opened the possibility of getting back into photography without the need for darkroom work. I work now primarily in color and am continuing to hone my aesthetic and technical skills. I remain an amateur in what I think is the best sense of the word. I may sell a print now and then but I do photography for the love of it.

In my profession life, I was a faculty member at Duke University Medical Center for many years and now, in partnership with my wife, have a small company that does consulting in the pharmaceutical field.
