Peggy's Cove, Hurricane Bill Options

First time posting images here. This was taken during hurricane Bill. It was a spectacular event for a normally peaceful setting. Contrast was a huge problem as there was so much sea mist. Sun was just starting to come through low heavy clouds which provided a beautiful light.

I like the first, the way the V shape in the foam holds the lighthouse. The second looks rather ordinary.

I like both of them, particularly the first one. The wave effect as well as its full, rich colors make it my favorite of the two.

The second one could be as nice as the first one also, in its own way, if it weren't as washed-out as it is. The colors just don't seem as rich as the first.

The waves are great, although I could do without the OOF grasses in the foreground the second one. Must have been one BIG wind, because in the top image the lighthouse seems to be leaning one way, and leaning the other way in the next image. Maybe it's just my eyes...

Each image is excellent - composition wise. Each would make a splendid post card or note card or use in a calendar.

the second image needs more saturation and contrast to make the colors 'pop'. I like the grass in the foreground as it provides much depth for the image.

The top image is by far the most interesting and yes looking at each image does portray the lighthouse at a different angle.

I also think (my opinion) I would not hesistate to place a huge 40 x 60 on my wall of that top image. An image such as that can keep you captivated and roaming throughout the image for lengthy periods of time.

Great outstanding images - for sure - 5 stars !!

Thanks for all of the comments. I agree the second one does lack contrast but as I said, the was a lot of sea mist in the air and it was a lot of work to get it back this far. It was also blowing about 80mph so the grass in the foreground has a lot of movement to it. Lying on the ground it was difficult just to get a sharp image. I will try to work the second one again and see if I can get a little more pop out of it.

Majik, funny you should mention it, I had a meeting today with a local hotel and they have agreed to allow me a full display of about 20 images all around the hotel. I had chosen this one for a 35x60 gallery wrapped print. Here is a picture of one location in the dining room, I added the image in PS just to get an idea of what the print will look like in certain locations throughout the hotel. I photographed many locations today and will add prints in PS to preview everything.

Anyone have any experience in printing a 40x60 from a D300 file? It is going on canvas so that should disguise most resolution problems. I am going to give Simply Canvas a go and they suggest to resize the files to 100dpi. Anyone use them and have comments on how to print this large would be great....

Why the hell would any photo printing service request that you downsize a print to 100 dpi? In my opinion, the more the better.

If you have an understanding of how to manipulate curves, you can selectively control any tonality that you wish in that second image (my favorite, composition-wise).

bellimages, that is a great question! That is why I am asking if anyone here has had work printed by them. They are a pro lab who only deal in canvas printing. I would love to hear feedback from anyone who may have used them. www.simplycanvas.com is their site.

Well, let me see if I got the math right: the original file appears to be 4288 pixels long, to be printed to 60 inches long... that would result in approximately 71 ppi... therefore, they are not requesting to downsize, but to upsize by about 50%, in order to reach 100 ppi.

P.S. The first picture would look great as a black & white conversion as well, imho.

Outstanding lighthouse in a storm pics. Among the nicest of the many lighthouse pics I have seen posted here. I like them both very much and think that the moving grass adds dimension and sensuality. And congrats on getting to make large prints for the hotel.

PS: I'm a quasi-transplanted Newfie, with a home up by Lanse aux Meadows that I visit in every season. My favorite lighthouses there are Cape Norman, which is incredibly wild and windy even in mid-summer, and Cape Bauld, on Quirpon Island which my house overlooks.

Sabatia, thanks for the comments... I am a Newfie as well, moved to Nova Scotia about 6 years ago. I spent alot of time on the west coast and Northern Peninsula, beautiful place for sure.

Those are both quite beautiful. Each has a different feel (the second one being more "painterly"), but both are equally as arresting visually.

Seeing these caused me to pull out a print from a visit to Peggy's Cove from almost twenty years ago. The exact opposite - very calm and foggy;my daughter and I used to joke about "the boat arranger" that must have placed the colored dories for photo ops. My mother's family was from a now extinct town called Londonderry Mines which is near Truro, but I've only been up there once. Probably should get up there again.
