Hi,

My wife and I will be spending a week in Michigan's Upper Peninsula this September, and I was wondering if anyone could recommend some good spots to shoot while up there. Our plans include hiking through Hiawatha National Forest, visiting Pictured Rocks National Lakeshore, Big Spring, and possibly Seney National Wildlife Refuge.

We'll be staying in Manistique, so we'll be on the Eastern side of the U.P. Any advice would be greatly appreciated!

This is in the Porcupine Mtns area.
Also Pesque Isle has some nice selections (there is a trail that runs along each side of the black river).

Try the lighthouses along the coastline

I would ask for tourist guides from the Chambers of Commerce or
Travel America or Photograph America also has where to go to photograph Upper Penninsula.

On the east end, you've got Drummond Island as well as the Les Cheneau Islands. On the west end, the Porcupine Mountains (and nearby region) offer an unlimited supply of photographic opportunities.

I live in the Eastern UP about 30 miles east of Manistique. I would recommend the following. Seney Wildlife Refuge you can take the marshland drive which takes about an hour or you can go to the northern hardwood trail and actually hike into the back country if your up to it.

I would then visit Pictured rocks If you start on the west end you can see miners castle (one tower fell down this year) and then just continue to proceed east (the trip is about 30 miles from the west to east end with numerous stopping points) most require getting out and hiking. Mosquito falls (about a 3 mile hike) and Chapel falls ( 1mile hike) are great you can do them in a loop which will take you down to lake superior and then back up 6miles round trip. The other areas are Great Sable Dunes which is near the east end by Grand Marais. There is construction down on the east end. The visitor center is on the west end in Munising.

I would also visit Tahquamenon Falls and then head up to Whitefish point you can do both in one trip. Whitefish point will be in fall bird migration mode by September with large numbers of hawks, eagles, owls and waterfall by the hundreds starting thier migration.

There are other areas but if your only up for week this will get you started.

The straits bridge is very pretty, though I am not sure of the legal implications of photographing it given the current security climate. (Don't get caught?)

I found the area very nice, though I hardly took a picture (end of a long trip, needed to make better time, lighting wrong, etc.) The clouds ccoming in from the lake were unbelievable two days ago.
