Can anyone tell me the diameter of the lens hood on the Canon 70-200 f/4L and 70-200 f/2.8L? I doubt the IS and non-IS versions are different, but I'm really interested in the IS versions.

The 70-200 f/4.0 lens uses a 67mm filter diameter and the f/2.8 uses a 77mm diameter. The version for f/2.8 lens is tulip-shaped and the one for the f/4 is round. I believe that versions for non-IS and IS use the same hood (same for f/4 IS and non-IS, same for f/2.8 IS and non-IS).

Thanks, but I knew the filter size. What I'm looking for is the outer diameter, since that will determine fit in a bag. I could make a pretty close guess from photos of the lens with the hood installed, but I'd prefer to know fairly precisely - say within about 5mm (metric) or a quarter inch (medieval).

Perhaps I should elaborate... Lowepro's lens pouch recommendations aren't always entirely accurate, or at least "best" fit. For example, they say a 200mm f/2.8 L USM II will fit in a "Lens Case 2", but really the hood is quite tight in that case. It works much better in a "Lens Case 3", which also has enough length to add teleconverters in the same bag. Conversely, the 135mm f/2 L will actually fit in a "Lens Case 1W", which is considerably shorter than a "Lens Case 2". Primarily that's what I'm interested in: will a Canon 70-200 f/4L IS fit comfortably in a Lowepro "Lens Case 2", a Canon 70-200 f/2.8 L IS fit comfortably in a Lowepro "Lens Case 3", is there enough height/depth to also fit a 1.4x TC, and then there's fit in my regular bags. Lens length, diameter, and weight are often-cited statistics, but lens hoods seem to be a forgotten component. Does anyone NOT use the hoods with these lenses?

I don't have a 70-200 f/2.8 IS at the office but here are some measurements:

Hood maximum diameters
24-70 f/2.8:       10.4 cm
70-200 f/4 IS: 10.0 cm
100-400 IS:       11.5 cm

Lens length (with both caps)
70-200 f/4 IS: 19.7 cm
100-400 IS: 21.5 cm
Extender 1.4 II 5.3 cm
70-200 f/4 IS + Extender 1.4: 22 cm

Lowe pro Lens case (interior dimensions, from LowePro.com website)
LC 2: 9.0 cm x 21.0 cm
LC 3: 11.0 cm x 20.5 cm
LC 4: 11.5 cm x 25.5 cm

I included the 100-400 IS lens because its size is very similar to the 70-200 f/2.8 IS (perhaps a cm longer and hood should be about the same size). The 24-70 f/2.8 has also a large hood some my guess is that the hood of the f/2.8 version (70-200) should be around 11cm in diameter. You also have to remember that the f/2.8 comes with a removable lens tripod collar.

Another interesting measurement for you:

135 f/2: hood diameter is 10.0cm, in other words exactly the same diameter as for the 70-200 f/4 IS hood

(Hood for 135 f/2 is model ET-78II; for 70-200 f/4 IS: ET-74)

The 135/2L hood is indeed 10 cm, while the 200/2.8L hood is almost 11 cm. Which explains why Lens Case 3 is needed for the 200/2.8L prime. But that lens has a 72mm filter diameter while the 70-200/2.8L IS has a 77mm filter. So I'm still wondering if the 70-200/2.8L IS will fit in Lens Case 3. It's too close to call without a measurement within 5 mm.

I believe that the 70-200 f/2.8 will fit in Lens Case 3 (without the tripod collar) but barely. I remember that I decided to purchase Lens Case 4 for my 100-400, I was not comfortable with the snug fit of Lens Case 3. You may want to contact LowePro directly (info@lowepro.com) or order from an online store with a favorable return/exchange policy.

I had to make my choice (LC 3 vs LC 4) in less than 5 minutes so my impression might have been badly skewed (?).

I've measured the external diameter of the lens and Canon LZ1324 carrying case, which is included when you purchase the 70-200 f/2.8L IS.

Lens:

Hood diameter: > 11.1 cm
Width including tripod collar and RRS 86 D plate: 11.9 cm
Length including lens cap and protective rear cover: ca. 22 cm

Case:

Small diameter: ca. 11 cm
Large diameter: ca. 13.5 cm
Length: ca. 25 cm

The walls of the case are between 0.5 and 0.75 cm thick, the bottom is thicker.

The carrying case is just large enough for the lens with tripod collar and an RRS 86 D plate.
