Great pictures Witek. My wife and I have done several trips to Northern Canada, Alaska, and Iceland. Spitzbergen / Svalbard Islands have been on our list of future places to visit for some years now.
What are the logistics for getting to Hornsund Fiord from Longyearbyen? Charter boat or plane?
Ironically it is less expensive for us (who live in Canada) to travel to Spitzbergen than it is to travel to northern Canada! We are leaving in one month for the Clyde River, Baffin Island, Canada where we are going to do a three week ski trip among the fiords.
Perhaps Spitzbergen in 2008.

thanks

It's really beautiful place !
Logistics, yes, you can get there only by boat or helicopter...
I spent there one year, and will go to Hornsund again,
for next year, in June

Absolutely beautiful!
In the photo of the polar bear and the sled dogs, what kept the bear from attacking the dogs?

Great photos!
what happened to the dogs barking at the Polar Bear?
or what happened to the bear?
I don't think a pack of dogs can scare a bear!

Stunning photos!
It looks like a good alternative to Antarctica for people who want remote, icy, spectacular beauty.

Nothing happened, bear ran from the dogs

They are all very careful and here are few meters between dogs and the bear.
Bears often crossing te station, and dogs warn people against them.

Thanks for sharing - A wonderful set from an incredible place. Some of the shots could use straightening of the horizon, but this is a minor fix. I will soon share some photos from another remote, northern location - the Yukon.

Hi Witek,
Great photos!
I'm going on a 10 day trip around Spitzbergen in late July and wanted some photography tips

.
Do you think a UV or CP filter is needed? Also, I'm thinking of bringing lens hoods as I presume the sun will low in the sky most of the time.
How much daylight do you get in late July? Does the sun ever set?
The camera I'm thinking of taking is a Nikon D80 with 18-135 kit lens and 70-300 VR.
cheers,
Vinny

The sun is up 24/7 in july, but during "night time" it is low on the horizon.
On a boat some protection of the lens from seawater can be wise as bad weather is not unheard of and it is often windy.

Some superb pictures there, my only issue would be maybe to edit the gallery a bit. It got stronger as it went on, maybe a few really good graphic images that look good as thumbnails on page 1 to hook viewers in?

I too am off to Spitzbergen in June for a week of photography and would like to know if it is worthwhile bringing a medium format digital setup. I will be bringing Nikon D2x/D200 and lenses from 12-400 but I may have the option to bring a H3D and lenses.
Is this more cumbersome than it is worth? I think I will be shooting mainly from a boat and zodiacs , but also landing somewhere every day.
Having just had my first experience wilth the H3D and being blown away by the quality and ease of use I am tempted to bring one along but only if it is not likely to be a hindrance or remain unused.
Any advice very welcome.
Thanks

Cool!
I was in Spitzbergen about 10 years ago, but sadly I hadn't yet taken up photography. It's definitely on my list of places to return to though.
