Michael,
You mention the silent mode as a new feature, but the 1Ds MkII has a silent mode that fits the description. Was that not available in the 1D MkII, and is it the same as the 1Ds MkII silent mode? I use it all the time.

I'm very curious about this myself. It's a PF on previous 1-series, and I too keep it enabled all the time. I'm wondering whether it's really improved somehow on the Mark III, or simply made more accessible and publicized more. I'm hoping for the former.

Agreed! I'm thinking also we should start a public petition for a dedicated mirror lock-up button on the 1Ds MkIII ...
BTW, Michael, your model really is a dog!

Silent shutter mode has been an option via personal function 21 since the original 1D in 2001 -
http://www.dpreview.com/reviews/canoneos1d/page11.aspI'm not sure what has changed in the Mark III. It is great if they have made it even more silent.
I keep it enabled on the Mark II all of the time as it only functions when the camera is in single frame drive mode. When the camera is in continuous (high or low) drive mode, the silent shutter feature is disabled.

I have my 1Ds and 1D-MkII bodies configured this way, so that I can quickly go "silent" if I want to, or shoot rapidly, whichever the situation requires.
