Let's say I have pictures in the Library in several different catalogues taken in many places around the world. Each has its own name - eg, Paris, New York, Barcelona etc. Can I create an empty catalogue in the Library and move them all into it under one generic title, say, TRAVEL SHOTS?

Yes with LR 1.1 you can do this.

1. File > new catalog

before that you have to create a catalog of selected images .

2. In library module select the thumbs > File > export as catalog.
Now you have exported a catalog which only contains your selected images.

3. open the newly created catalog > File > Import from catalog> choose the catalog from which you just created.

This will bring the images from different catalogs all into one.

Thanks for that, R.
