You can get shutter actuations off the manufacturer's exif info on an image. But to do that, you need an exif viewer, of which there are free ones on the net which can be downloaded. You have to download one for your particular OS (Mac or PC.) I did this a long time ago on my D2x, and that's how I remember it. A Google search will turn up a exif viewer for you. Ordinary exif data readers, like the one found in Lightroom, will not display that information.

Both photoshop cs2 and cs3 can give you the total
number of exposures. It's buried under 'file info'.

1. Open the last photo taken.
This can be either a jpeg or a nef.

2. Under FILE... select "file info"

3. Select "advanced"

4. Select "http://ns/adobe.com/exif/1.0/aux/"

5. Look for aux:ImageNumber: nnnnn.

There's other useful information there as well.
