Here is one more from my few days using the Phase One P45+ for the first time. I must say that the detail produced by this back is just incredible. And if you missed my prior posts, this was with the Mamiya 645AFDII with the Mamiya 105-210AF lens.

I am all for pretty girl shots and I have no idea whether you simply want bland compliments or whether some sort of critique would be useful or not, but here goes (takes deep breath at this point)...
To me you have overcooked the eyes in post-processing. I noticed similar problem with the first of your images in the swimwear thread (the rest were very nice). If you have a reflector to the right of the model and the left side of the face is clearly in shadow, then the left eye should be darker than the right, where it is not actually. The result is she looks a bit like a Stepford wife.
Sorry to be critical and you may well have no problem with this, but I have noticed that one or two people on this thread have not taken criticism well or been sensitive about other things.

You are posting some great photos!

Can I ask why you chose the Phase One P30+ instead of a different model or a Leaf or Sinar or Hassy or.... Just a brief answer would be great, not looking to create a thread of arguments, just looking for your thoughts.

Thanks!

Thanks a lot Ian...
My reasoning...
Already was familiar with Mamiya and I actually had no way to try anything before I bought it so I researched and researched and a lot of help from people in here helped me a lot.
I also DID NOT like the Leaf Battery and Fan deal.. threw me off.
I also had a good offer for a whole package including RZII lens and the P30 back used with 1 Year warranty. That also helped a lot.
Where I live Unfortunately it is in South America and they are backwards ass here..
Everything is a pain in the butt here, starting with the clients do not Pay extra for anything, VERY ANNOYING.
So I could not factor in the cost and went with the best deal at the time I could get.
Also from shopping around on the net I finally came to the conclusion the P30 which I have Not the + series, was the most durable of the backs. I never came across anybody that had any problems with theirs...
Sending in and out of customs here is a pain in the butt so I wanted the least trouble possible.
Also I have been using C-1 by Phase with my Canons since the Beginning and always like to the RAW converter.

I am actually thinking about either moving up to the P30+ series...
Unfortunately , Again, where I live my clients do not pay more for having Better equipment so I have to eat the cost which are HIGH. Especially down here.
I would love to have Phase some how sponsor me and would love to get a discount to move up to the P30+...Yeh I know it probably won't happen, But Leaf has contacted in the past to have some kind of Sponsor ship but nothing has been concrete.
I basically went with Phase because I thought it would be the one with less troubles in the long run.
I have an offer right now to trade up my P30 for a P30+ and new Phase camera kit for 13,500 usa $ more or less but I really have not made any profit from the P30 to be able an upgrade..
South America is not the Money making market....
I do fine, but all extras are b/c I want or need them.
I go against guys shooting 5D's for the same Price range...
Again b/c the Clients are stupid here....:+}
Thanks fro the comments and feel free to e-mail me with any more questions!
I am shooting the P30 with the RZII and AFDII at the moment.
Snook

PS. wanted to add...
There are so many bonehead people in the agencies (art directors/retouchers) usually screw up the files before they get printed whether it is from a 5D or a P45 with all the photoshopping and not watching how the Blacks are going to print up and they screw the image up 90% of the time..
Very Frustrating , But still Better than nothing...:+]

Sorry Thierry smile.gif

It was a fantastic night though, at least for some of us. Fantastic match for the Dutch and the neutral soccer lover. Maybe not so for the French smile.gif

I am pretty sure they will want to win. The coach is not the type of guy to give anything away. So it is up to the French to do their thing because I am pretty confident the Dutch want to win.

The players that come in to replace the ones with yellow cards & those that need to get fit for the quarter finals will be highly motivated as well.

This for a client shot the other day...
A little young for my normal Clientele but I like how they came out..
I do my retouching and for those that retouch I think they appreciate the quality even more than the photographer in MFDB files..
I sure do..
Every time I open a file I am still amazed at the Quality... biggrin.gif

Apologies for posting a couple of DSLR pics in an MF thread but I thought our lighting
approach is somewhat similar apart from the fact that my 'set' is only about 6 inches wide !

Same shadows and top highlights,though
To add mediun format relevant content I have tried this series (I'm up to about 70 Quebec
species so far) using an H3939 and 120 macro but the magnification (anywhere from
1/2 to twice lifesize) and aperture requirements (f16-f19 on full frame 35mm format)
make it impractical.  As it is I can just hold enough focus at f16 but with a 645 chip
even @ f16 image sharpness degrades seemingly worse than 35mm.

As I'm eventually looking to go with large prints, any suggestions as to how to make this
work with a MFDB would be appreciated but I fear optical laws make it an improbability.

To complicate matters,every subject is living (although some are refrigerated to slow
them down a bit) and all are released.  All survived excdpt for a couple of mosquitos!

Another From a more classic client but I liked this....
RZII with the 65mm Cropped in pretty tight..
Yet another advantage to the 30 megapixel and up backs is the ability to really crop in on an image and still retain printable images...
Never got that on the Canon...:+}

Today Roosmarijn visited the studio for a quick session.
Main reason was to test the Mamiya RZ67ProII with the Leaf Aptus digital back.
Shot was done with the 110mm f2.8 lens.
And a new focus screen is on order biggrin.gif although the shots turned out sharp focussing was problematic with low key settings.

Frank your doing a lot of post right?
The really Plastic skin is all post right?
I have always noticed the Leaf system looking plasticy but usually your the only one posting semi fashion Lifestyle type pictures that you turn really plastic the skin always on your models..
Is that all post?
I always heard that leaf guys say the same about Phase...But I only have your images that you post to go by, which are really Post Processed..
Your a curios question, not that anything there is anything wrong with plasticy skin...:+}
Snook
Just wondering..

Question for Frank and Snook.

Since both of you are using 645 AFDII and RZ67 Pro II, how would you compare the two systems
in usage as well as the results? Any input on strengths and weaknesses for studio fashion and beauty work would be much appreciated.

Richard
Frank Doorhof
@Snook.
Downscaling does alot of harm for the way I process the images.

I compared the Imacon (hassy), Phase one and Leaf before I bought and the Leaf had the best skintones and shadow detail, very closely followed by Phase one.
I do some skin smoothing but most of the problems is the downconversion to the net, and I hate to do my work twice, once for the net and once for the prints biggrin.gif

@rgmoore,
This was my first test session with the RZ67 ProII.
What I CAN say is that the contrast of the RZ lenses seem to be better than from the Mamiya 645, also small details like chains etc. seem to have a more 3D look, which is probarbly due to the contrast.
But I really have to shoot more to be sure.
First I will wait for the new focusscreen.
Outside focussing is no problem, also with alot of lights no problems, but this session I used alot of striplights and than focussing became very problematic, it can be done by the way, but I like to shoot handhold and faster than the RZ allows me now.
Snook
Frank your going to love it with the new focus screen..:+}
I had the same problem,Different Story, got a new screen and you can not take the RZII out of hands now...:+}
Which screen did you get?
Anyways enjoy.. your going to love it..
PS. Get the 140 Macro if you can.. it is sweet also..:+}

I ordered the brighter screen, somehow I got the best vibes from that one biggrin.gif
I ordered #5, prism with the diagonal split.
And they will engrave the crop lines in it.

Total costs arround 375.00 US with shipping.

I already liked working with the RZ, but it's a bit getting used to the left/right biggrin.gif
Felt a bit seasick after the shoot, but it will get better I think when I don't have to think about focussing only.

at the moment I own the 110mm f2.8, 95 and 180mm 3.5
I will look into different lenses when I have everything working the way I want.

The funny thing is when you change back to the 645AFD/II the viewer seems like poststamp.

We’ve been in Alaska now going on three weeks and currently in Homer. Went out earlier this morning and found ourselves in 2 Sisters Bakery. Fresh coffee, rolls..you get the idea. Anyway I had my Mamiya/P30+ along with the 28mm lens and took a fast handhold shot from inside and this was the result; landscape of a slightly different venue.

I am surprised that rubber feet of tripods are not allowed either? Where was the location, was it a temple or a new hotel?

It's a Jain temple in Rajasthan...

Most major temples in India or heritage listed sites have banned tripods altogether with little exception...
