It's a Jain temple in Rajasthan...

Most major temples in India or heritage listed sites have banned tripods altogether with little exception...

Some details too attached.

Mostly tripods are banned because they than think you are a pro photographer making money of their property.
Which is ridicilous.

I was walking on the Santa Monica blvd and some security person walks to me and asked me if I was a pro photographer (maybe the Mamiya gave me away), I told her I was a tourist and why she asked.
She answered, pro photographers are not allowed to take pictures on the blvd because it was privat property.
I told her if I was a pro I would have had a tripod, she look bewildered and let me go... biggrin.gif

Pricing is about the same as Maxwell and Beattie as far as I can see.
I hope to receive it in 2 weeks.
It should be 3-4 times brighter than the standard Mamiya focus screens.

Frank the 4&5 looks cool.
Which one did you buy and PLEASE do comment when you get it..
I had a Bill Maxwell screen stolen from me..(Long story)
and was thinking about trying a higher end "bright/Beattie" style screen..
Please let us know if you are happy with the purchase.
Thanks a lot

Permitting in Los Angeles can be an art in it's ownself. Santa Monica, Los Angeles, Culver City, Beverly Hills all have different requirements, regulations, insurance bonds, etc. etc.

If the spot was In Santa Monica, then permission is required by the merchants association, the city and maybe the county, maybe even the Pier itself. Each area is different.

LA's though to learn and I've cut about 30 billion permits there and can tell you that rarely do they happen without some difficulty.

It's ironic because the only thing LA makes is little pictures so you would think it would be easy, but it's not, it's the world's hardest to manuver and I could write a book on the location adventures in LA but nobody would believe me.

Still, there is not a place on the planet that offers more diverse locations, better weather and a decent talent base for still or moving images.

You are wrong about the paranoia because it's not about fear, it's about money and everybody wants money. I've had a 220lb woman stand in front of my lens (on a legal permitted location) and scream obcenities until we wrote her a check.

You are right that California is another country. It is and is many ways quite proud of it.

Regardless of what anyone thinks about california and New York, they are the places to make photos. I work everywhere and getting through LA and NY is tough, but at least what you put in front of your lens is right and the crews are good.

Nowhere else in the U.S. offers as much, so it's harder and more expensive and even though I love Paris, somewhat like Milan, everytime we shoot there the models and the crew talk about going to NY where the real money is.

Thouigh working the streets of New York is much different than Los Angeles and if you know people and have built some equity (NY is all about equity) you'd be amazed how easy and nice people are in shooting run and gun editorial.

We've taken over small bistros at the spur of the moment and paid very little. In LA that would never happen.*

The last thing you want in photography is compromise. I find it fascinating when I work in Dallas or even San Francisco and the crew is more expensive than NY or LA and the work speed is 1/2 of those two cities, not to mention the talent (model) base is 1/100oth of what LA and especially NY offer.

JR

*last night we had dinner in this small cafe where we shot an editorial. We brought them about 6 magazines and at the end of the night they comped the meal. That wasn't requested or even desired so we paid anyway, but that is a side of New York that most people don't know about.

I've had this happen in Paris, even Spain, but I don't think it would ever happen in LA.
Snook
I agree with permits etc. obviuosly when you have crews and catering and vans and wind machines and generators etc. etc..
But just some professional with a tripod that wants to shoot some nice street scene...
You got to be kidding me..
This is what the world ( More so the US ) is coming down to..
Pay fro everything the world is not "Free" anymore.
I think the US will soon have to take out the phrase land of the free...:+}
Seriously..
Miami was a perfect example of how it all went to crap...:+}
I once in Miami was shooting in the street with permit and the typical Diner was on the otherside of the street but in my shot..
The owner came across the street and demanded I paid money...
I told him basically he could go F# himself that I had a permit..
So he , which I am sure you all have had in your life time...:+}, started blocking my shots.... He would try and pass between me an the model..
I finally had the production company call the Cops which were literally adjacent and down a little..
They came and the guy finally left because I had a permit.
This is totally ridiculous...
That was about 5 years ago and it only has gotten worse.
Really disappointing..
Almost as disappointing as any guy with a 5D and Photoshop is a photographer these days!
Snook

Wait a second, I have a 5D too smile.gif But I keep it hidden and make sure that I have my Mamiya close by. And I am not that good with PhotoShop.

Permits here are a fact of life, ya just gotta do it. But it does take the spontaneity out of shoots that I would otherwise like to do sometimes.

@Snook,
I ordered the #5.

It was indeed on the Pier.
I could photograph everywhere without a problem, but in the small themepark they were very strict, but after my talk it was all ok.

On another note, I will never tell someone to go F** themselfs, and somehow I get everything done I want, most of the time showing the owner that his place is not in the picture helps.
Or what helps the best is offering him to visit his store with the crew and take some free shots with the models in his place for free.
Most of the time they open up and you can even get them to rearrange seats and offering free drinks biggrin.gif

I have always acted like a big friendly guy, you can always turn arround and be angry later, luckely it never had to happen for me biggrin.gif.

The world is getting harder and harder, sometimes a little bit of friendlyness will break that hard barrier and people will open up, when they don't...... I'm not that easy biggrin.gif

The lens was either a 24mm digitar (80% sure) or possibly a 35mm - there is no lens exif info from the alpa...

Both are razor sharp.

This is actually from a shoot I did over a year ago. It has been one of the images used from that shoot by the client extensively. It was with the Leaf 65 on the Mamiya 645AFDII and the 55-110AF lens.

@Dlew,
Rodeodrive was a strange experience indeed.
LOTS of beautiful people and cars.

A bit of a surreal feeling.
Frank Doorhof
Today the first session with the RZ67ProII with the Leaf.
I tested the 110mm f2.8 and the 180mm and must say that although focus with the standard screen is a bitch I was wildly surprised with the sharpness this system delivers....

A 100% crop straight out of the cam (very, very slightly sharpenend by photoshop):

Maybe someone can add to my experience.
I know the 645 by heart, I expected the RZ67ProII to be equal or little less.
At the moment however I have changed my opinion, it SEEMS that the RZ lenses have slightly better contrast and better blackrendition giving the shots a more real look and more contrasty.

I should have to shoot the two next to each other to be 100% sure, but what I see now I prefer the RZ above the 645, I wonder if more people have experience with both.

hi simon,

nice feel to the shot. How do u find the 50mm lens. Are you using the ULD version or the older one. Since you've been using the system for 20yrs, i'm sure you must have used the older 50mm lens also. How different are they for todays cropped sensors? Also, pls post some more samples of the same combo.

thnx,

Hi Sid,

Thanks for the complement

Sorry this was a photo shot for the new Nokia GPS cell phone advert thats why the snow border is at the beach and not the snow cause he is lost.

I'm still using the original 50 mm lens I bought back in 1988 and of course it not as wide with the Leaf Aptus 75 chip but if I need wider I revert to my Mamiya 645 AFDII kit which has a 28mm lens.

My dream back would have a 6x7cm chip, if one came out I would probable get a paper cut pulling out my cheque book out of my back pocket so fast.

hi simon,

do you find any red/blue CA problems with the 50mm in moderate/high contrast areas?

Don't know about 67 but a 6x6 (actually a 48x48)sensor is something i hear to be coming up.

On the other hand, a 7x7 sensor would be cool...just like polaroids.

Was That the 500 normal or the ULD?
I am thinking about picking up this lens but not sure if the ULD is worth the extra cost...
Care to let me know what you think Simon?
I have the 65 but wanted to get a little wider with the P30 as it has a crop..

Hi Snook,

I haven't tried the new Mamiya 50mm ULD so I don’t know of any difference but I'm sure there is.

OK the sensor got a bit scratched and the live view didn't help with the focusing, but the models were amused with the camera.
