Not even thinking about the sexual content etc, very intriguing depth and shadows, tonal quality. Very moody. Very impressive! well done!

I put people in boxes ... but its not about sexuality, its about how people build walls around themselves. A lot of my images have to do with the idea that it hard to decide what to do with oneself. The box is a metaphor for holding you in, containing you and preventing you from taking action. You create your own box by not being able to decide what to do with your life.

Strong picture - the milk one - it certainly makes you look! But has it got any meaning beyond what one sees?

don't worry, I hear that soya milk is good for the skin.
Speaking of starvation, here's something totally politically incorrect

It's a tribute to hawkers in Singapore. part of a series. it'll only make sense if you've been to hawker centres there. On the other hand, it's also good if it doesn't make sense

Photography is an artform and I have always learned (and teach) that in art there is no right or wrong

Frank,
Despite any personal opinions here you have achieved something that most photographers can only dream about. I can scroll through thousands of pictures on internet and in a split second I will recognize Frank Doorhof work even before I see an Elinchrom logo. It is unmistakable yours, your style - love it or hate it.
The only other photographer I can say the same about it is Jorgan Teller. Most people I know can't even understand the phenomena of his success, my young assistants are saying " the King is nude"
but never less is the king.

I personally have a problem with the statement that photography is an art. I believe that photography can be an art, but it take an artist to make it an art. Has nothing to do with the media of photography by itself.

I agree 100%.

Photography can be a form of art. Like writing, singing, painting, gardening or cooking.

But i don't think that Ronald Mc Donald or the Colonel Sanders of KFC are great artists. But they have a lot of "restaurants".

And their products are easy to recognize !

I personally agree that while anyone can take a photograph that single act does not necessary make the person a photographer. Same with art, it takes a very special talent to turn a photograph into a piece of art; add to that, a mechanic has a skill while an artist has a talent. This thread containing a heck of a lot of images reinforces (at least to me) that we are privileged to have some very great talent amongst our members.

Hi,

A series of studio portraits of a group of people that live together on a veranda in the inner city. Some stay behind to guard their few belongings while the others go to beg on the street corners. They make about R50-00 ( 6.5 usd ) per day.

Thanks, Ivan

Franky,

Get over yourself, relax. csp is in all likelihood a chick, and not a guy. Probably strung a little too tight (so to speak). You may have on occasion put a lady in a cage. I may have put one in chains. I'm sure the right-wing, moralist photogs can gather and reminisce on Mark Tuckers private forum. In the meantime, enjoy your life, and enjoy your work.

From the last session.

Michael,

This is a great image. I noticed you shot it with the 80mm AF. If this is the newer Mamiya lens can you comment on how you like it?

I am about to take delivery on one and wondered about the quality and sharpness.

Hi Ed,

Thanks. I have an older 80mm AF lens. Still, it is very sharp, though I find 55 mm even sharper at the edges. Good luck with your lens.

Thank you don, I wanted to post something here --after admiring the good work of everyone else-- but my work with the Mamiya was mostly that, work. Now I'm stationed in Bolivia that is a silver mine of potential images and the Phase/afd is the perfect mining tool. I discovered that the LCD is not so bad after all since in bright sun you can tilt it until it works with incident light... two batteries -mine are old, so two new ones is in TO BUY list-- are good for a day shoot, and so are two 4G cards. The camera is as big as a big Nikon/Canon system, so I will post some more if you don't minid... : )

Hallo Dirk,

Miskien eerder engels ter wille vd ander!?

I really admire and like David Goldblatt's work, especially 'some afrikaners photographed' I find some of his newer colour work also interesting.( My film personal work was all B&W) I think he is very principled and at his age he is still going strong. At a lecture, many years ago, we talked about Arnold Newman's portrait of that Nazi industrialist( I think it was Krupp?) and he deplored Newmans lighting that made him(Krupp?) look more evil. Said it was
artificial. I really could identify with some of those people in his photographs.

As far as Ballen is concerned it is more difficult. In my view a photographer has a great responsibilty towards his subjects. I find it embarising ( on their behalf) to look at some of the people he photographed, and the poses he got them to do. I wonder if those people really understood what happened and the power of the media. If they were more sophisticated would they still do it? But nevertheless his work is very powerfull. a bit like Arbus, although I felt she treated her subject with more sympathy.

My problem is I like all sorts of photography. It becomes quite emotional photographing these people. You know, i find in talking to them that many of them have a 'problem' and I am not so sure that better circumstances would have improved their lot. Some of them just can't function in society. But the gratitude for simple gifts(a meal and a cup of tea) brings on my tears!

But I look at them as our conscience.
Landscapes are much easier and contemplative! (And Italy is also great)

Wat jou laaste statement betref. ek stem saam! As mens kyk na die huidige vermorsing v geld en talent en plein incompetance is dis plain scary!

Groete,

Ivan
