When I'm shooting tethered with eos-utility on a mac I'm always hitting the buffer never with a card.
For me it is much too slow shooting fashion in the studio tethered.
I never had this problem tethered on firewire with my markII.
My Phaseone P30+ is faster because you can't hit the buffer.

Have you updated to the latest EOS Utility (2.3) for OSX?

Some test results of tethered shooting with the 1DsIII including some comparisons with the 1DsII. The IDsII has the edge on speed because of its firewire interface. The test mostly focuses on the 1DsIII however.

These timings are with the EOS Utility preferences set so that there is no linked software. There was no memory card in the camera for these tests. EOS Utility v2.3 on Mac OSX, version 2.2 on Windows XP and on the G4. Cameras Manual Focused.

All timings are approximate and used the 'wet finger in the air method' for recording times. I was most interested in the relative speed of different methods.

1) MacOSX Leopard, MBP 2.3GHz, Tethered Shooting, RAW, 10 seconds.
2) MacOSX Leopard, MBP 2.3GHz, Remote Live View, RAW, 30 seconds.
3) MacOSX Leopard, MBP 2.3GHz, Tethered Shooting, L JPG, 5-6 seconds.
4) MacOSX Leopard, MBP 2.3GHz, Remote Live View, L JPG, 13 seconds.
5) WinXP Bootcamp, MBP 2.3GHz, Tethered Shooting, RAW, 5 seconds.
6) WinXP Bootcamp, MBP 2.3GHz, Remote Live View, RAW, 13-15 seconds.
7) WinXP Bootcamp, MBP 2.3GHz, Tethered Shooting, L JPG, 1-2 seconds.
8) WinXP Bootcamp, MBP 2.3GHz, Remote Live View, LJPG, 5-6 seconds.
9) MacOSX Leopard, G4 MB 12", Tethered Shooting, RAW, 30 seconds.

But more significantly.

A 10 frame RAW burst in tethered mode

10) MacOSX Leopard, MBP 2.3GHz, 1Ds II - 10 seconds
11) MacOSX Leopard, MBP 2.3GHz, 1Ds III High Speed Burst - 60 seconds
12) WinXP Bootcamp, MBP 2.3GHz, 1DsIII High Speed Burst - 15 seconds

I conclude from this that shooters of fashion might prefer to stick with the 1DsII if the file size is OK (which it probably is for many purposes), particularly if they rely on a Mac.

Thanks, that confirms my numbers reasonably well. I didn't expect that processor speed would have much impact and it looks like your test is a little faster, but within a similar range.

Another point I will make that the the markIII will stop transferring at the moment you make another shot into the buffer and that the markII transfers when the buffer becomes available so you can go on shooting.

Anyone know why the Windows emulation runs faster?

Because WindowsXP skips the Leopard USB drivers and uses it's own drivers.

I just installed a beta-release off OsX 10.5.6 and the tehered speed with the 1DsmarkIII is great.

If that is the case, tethering with C1 Pro will definitely be much faster than what it is right now since the improvement is probably at the USB port itself. Thank you.

that is GREAT news....i was wondering if we had to wait for 10.6 (which seems to be ahead of schedule, but still...) i am guessing 10.5.6 should be out next week....
are you using LR or aperture? i am asking because so far none of the "new" canons (out in the last year) are supported for tethered shooting in aperture...yet...but that support really is built into the system software....i am mostly on aperture and am really hoping that this will be included in the new upgrade as well....either way good news that this is finally taken care of.....

Just installed the new 10.5.6 updates this morning and went to do a job the same day, the transfer speed has definantly improved. However I find EOS Utility far more buggy when shooting tethered. The problem I am encountering is occasionally when I fill the buffer the transfer will stop and will not start again. The only solution is to have a card i the camera, disconnect the cable and turn the camera off. This will write the remaining buffer to the card. After this EOS Utility cannot be restarted without it crashing immediately. The only way to get EOS Utility to work again is to reboot the computer. Has anyone else had this issue?

the first thing i would do is set up a new user account and test if the problem still remains. than delet all caches with a tool like onyx, test the hd with disk worrier and remove all canon related pref files. i also would watch activity monitor during shooting to see if an other programs run in the background and tries to connect to to the camera.

Thanks for your help CSP. I have updated EOS Utility and it appears to have fixed the problem. I updated and then shot tethered as fast as I could filled the buffer and kept shooting continuously for 20 frames with no issues. I consider the problem solved.....until the light is fading on my next shoot and i happens haha

I have found that DPP and EOS Utility are my fastest options when shooting tethered. I find that LR1.2 is a little slower than DPP in loading the images. I do not own C1Pro but may download the new v4 and test. I am running OS10.5.6, DPP3.4.1 and EOS Utility 2.5.1 on a late 2008 MBP with my 1DsII.
