Of course the 1DMkll is a better camera than the 20D. The question is, are the extra features good value for you? Do you need 8 frames per second and the slightly higher resolution that the 1D can give you? Faster focussing and  more accurate focussing are always welcome and I expect the 1DMkll will often be better than even a properly adjusted 20D in this regard, but a properly focussing 20D might suit your purposes well enough.

Must be my lucky day . I took the camera back for exchange. Because I deal with the place I got it from quite a lot, they rang up their supplier and complained about it. The supplier has agreed to send the 1D MKII as a replacement at no extra cost.

Am I reading this right? The 20D is malfunctioning, so Canon agreed to exchange it for a 1Dmk2 straight up?

Yep, the trail of events is that the supplier has contacted Canon UK and told them of the problems, and the fact that it cost me valuable photos (slight stretch of the truth). I believe they also told them that they would consider pulling out from being a Canon stockist, which although might seem small, I think this actual supplier have a very good relationship with other stockists.

Any way the rub of it is, I pick up the 1D MKII today

I posted a while ago about problems I had been having with my Canon 100mm f2.8 macro lens, and how I couldn't get it to focus properly. Well, the lens went in to my local camera store and was tested against an identicle lens, on the same camera, using the exact same settings.

The lens worked like a dream, the images were excellent.

Therefore, I now believe it is the camera. The camera is a Canon EOS 20D. Now as this camera is only just over a month old from me buying it, I am slightly reluctant to exchange it for another EOS 20D.

I do have the option of exchanging the EOS 20D for the Canon EOS 1D Mark II. This will mean me paying the difference, but if the benifits far outweight the extra spend I am willing to go with it.

If I had unlimited funds I would go for the EOS 1Ds, 16 mega pixel job, but I am quite happy to stay with the 8.2 mega pixel of the EOS 1D Mark II.

My question is this. Is the EOS 1D Mark II far superior to the EOS 20D.

Picked up the 1D MKII last night. Luckily for me, last night is rained hard, so the use of natural light was out of the question. I did try a few shots with the macro lens and slow shutter speed indoors, and got good results.

The resulting images were sharp throughout, so I know that the 20D was suffering form the front focusing issues.

What I did notice straight away was the shutter noise, or lack of it compared to the 20D.

Hopefully later I'll be able to get out and try a few bug shots with the macro lens.

I am in need of a new lens as the 20D came bundled with the 17-85, which had to go back. This was my reason for posting the other thread about the 50mm lenses.
