Full Version: Fisheye Image Correction SW for Mamiya 645 24mm

Now that the well liked ImageAlign and ImageAlign Professional software is apparently no longer available...........

What rectilinear image correction software programs are currently on the market that will work with Medium Format fisheye lenses such as the Mamiya 645 24mm and also the Arsat 30mm?

I am finding software programs, such as DxO for example, that only seem to correct for specific DSLR lenses, and do not include any MF fisheye lenses in their compatibility database.

If anyone out there has a copy of the ImageAlign or preferably the ImageAlign Professional program that they are willing to part with, please send a PM. I would appreciate hearing from you.

Thank you.

Hi Simon

Could you tell me what setting you found to be the best for this lens with Proxel.

Thanks

Jason

is image align totally dead as co?
what is the legal aspect of just sharing the SW now?

I think some would be willing to share (I believe Michael has used) but the uncertainty in sharing would be an issue for me at least

Gidday,

The owner of ImageAline is a chap called Geoff Knox based here in Hamilton, New Zealand.

I spoke to him some months ago to ask him when was he going to upgrade to CS3 and his reply was that he didn't get the sale's he was hoping for world wide and the soft wear developer was no longer with him and he couldn't afford the development costs to up grade hence why he decided to call it a day and shut down his business.

It is a shame as it is a fantastic bit of soft wear. Personally I think Abode should be knocking on his door to buy his soft wear and incorporate into Photoshop.

Cheers

Simon,

It's clear from this and other threads that there is still a market for ImageAlign. Do you have any way of contacting Geoff Knox now? If so, you might ask him whether he would be willing to sell copies of his last version "as is", with no warranty, for a modest price. Or, would he be willing to release it to the public domain so that the lucky ones who have it can feel right about sharing it with those that want it?

I use it regulary in CS3 with no problems (on a PC running XP Pro with SP2). I find it hard to imagine digital life without it.

Simon and Eric,

As the originator of this thread, I am very interested in any updates on the possibility of purchasing a remaining copy of the ImageAlign/ImageAlign Pro software or news about resurrecting the program into the public domain as shareware, freeware, etc..

Please keep me in the loop!

Thank you.

Consider Fisheye-Hemi from Image Trends, still very much in business!

Gidday,

Fisheye-Hemi is a very good fish eye correction plug in as it doesn't corrupt the edges of the image but unfortunately it doesn't correct horizontal curvature's in buildings compared to Proxel.

plugsnpixels,

Thanks for the reminder about this software. I find it great for correcting group portraits; but not so for the architecture, as Simon has commented. Also, I wish to thank all who have offered so far their suggestions for alternative programs to ImageAlign.

The Proxel software shows a lot of promise, but I am discoverng that I will need a lot more time with the program to get a good image correction with it. Also the instructions are spartan at best. It would be great if the most well known correction program, DXO, would consider a profile database of lenses for the medium format digital photographic equipment. Or that PhotoShop could vastly improve its distortion capabilities for the more extensive corrections needed with fisheye images for achitectural clients.

The more I investigate and work with the different software suggested to me, I find I have this "gut " feeling that many photographers have probably given up on this software approach, as it is definitely time consuming and has the potential to be very fussy to work properly. Time is money.

I do find it curious that out of a forum membership of over 30 thousand photographers, that nobody has come forward with an offer of a software copy of the ImageAlign/ImageAlign Pro or ImageAlign PhotoShop Plug-In. Hello?

I guess a lot more forum members than I first believed, have access to or own the Cambo, Alpa, Horseman, Silvestri, etc. class of medium format equipment necessary for those tight interior shots, thus eliminating in most cases the immediate need to resort to software distortion manipulation of the image. Maybe in a couple of years this will be my good fortune as well. It would be oh so nice to live in an area of the country where I could at least rent more appropriate equipment when needed.

Joe, I've got the software (see here), but if Geoff wanted it given away I suppose he could either do that himself or post his permission here ;-).

If he were smart he'd sell the technology, as Simon suggested. But again, that's Geoff's business, either way.

This scenario has also come up regarding buZZ, another piece of wonderful software that is now deadware.

The moral of the story: If you see something you like that is still available for purchase, buy it! The software business is very unstable and fluid. I've heard stories of people still using decade-old discontinued productivity software because nothing else came along to replace it.

See this chart, under "Lens distortion repair" for other possible options. I have one or two others I still need to create pages for.

I have an action I built in photoshop that corrects the fisheye of hassy 30mm

its very simple...

for phaseone h20 on hassy with 30mm fisheye:
increase canvas size by 3" each both v & h
then -30 sphere filter
then crop off the wings that are left.

your mileage may very but I've used this technic countless times for archetecture.

plugsnpixels,

I have followed the link to your website and clicked on the ImageAlign link only to find by no surprise that it is no longer operational. What am missing here?

My apologies, but the meaning of your statement that you have "got" the software is unclear to me.

Are you meaning to say that you are a software dealer and still have the ImageAlign program in your inventory? Or that you previously sold the software since I do not find any Buy button for this program on your site?

So true! Buying software right away when you see it is a good policy with regards to small "mom & pop" type companies such as the now defunct Grasshopper Software. However, I had no need of and was not even aware of this particular SW program until after my medium format fisheye lens purchases earlier this month.

BTW, thank you for the links to the other distortion correction software.

Joe, sorry I wasn't more clear. I have a review copy they sent me some years ago. I do not develop or sell software myself; I only provide organized and collated one-stop info so visitors can easily locate those who do.

I just revised my ImageAlign web page to show the current status of their company. It's sad; this was my favorite lens correction software.

I did consider the possibility that you may have just heard about ImageAlign recently and didn't have a chance to buy it, so don't feel the statement about not hesitating was directed to you personally. It's good advice for all of us.

plugsnpixels,

No offense taken.
