I will be traveling to alaska in August, for 32 days

counting traveling from Boston, and back I think will be like 13 days in the road,

the rest will be in Alaska,

I have cabins in haines 4nights/

kenai 4nights, and denali another 4

what can I do on those places?

So I have 5 days to go far north.

Will be good idea to go far north (deadhorse) , or go to another place?

even so I will no sleep tin deadhorse, but maybe in coldfoot.

I do not do tours. I may have some problems with that.

I will be driving a tacoma 4x4 or nissan if the tacoma don't come with goodies for 2009.

I have lived and worked in cold foot. same is true with deadhorse.

I have lived in each and every coastal village Above the Arctic circle from Kotzebue clear up to Barrow, which is my current residence at the moment.


Places to go of interest in Alaska.. ?
well those two mentioned have not much to offer.

Not like Denali does,, it is fantastick but north of Palmer is Majectic Valley close to Eureka..

Sensational place to wander for about 20 years.!! or 20 days.

continue on and head on down to Valdez.. spell binding place. I have lived and worked there also .. I have worked all over this state.

The Arctic is my heaven on earth paradise of the North !!

What are you looking for in adventure.. ?? Wiseman is a close place to cold foot that is interesting.. I still kick my self for not ceating an image of a sign on the tree leading into Wiseman

A very tiny community of perhaps ?? 75 people, if that.

Denali is great, but you will be lucky to have clear weather around Mt. McKinley.

I have had the mosquitos show up in pictures.

Consider a day or so fishing.

I grew up in the Boston area. My first house was in East Bridgewater.

On your drive upon the Alaska Highway, be sure to spend a little time in Northern BC around Muncho Lake and Stone Mountain as the wildlife is abundant.

Also beware of driving at twilight in the Alberta Peace River area as it is known as Moose Alley for good reason.

The road to Haines is great, as is the one to Skagway, You might look at leaving the Alaska Highway at Whitehorse and driving to Skagway; then take the ferry to Haines. Fishing is usually good in Haines and the sockey might be running on the Chilkoot River.

Valdez is well worth the side trip and I believe there is a ferry runs to Kenai from there.

I was born in Boston, and though I have spent a decent amount of time in Alaska--thought of moving there after a three month visit but ended up buying a place in northern Newfoundland--and doing lots and lots of photography in Alaska, I am certainly no Majik. (Majik, What the heck are you doing up there?)

My two recommendations:

Denali is one of the most incredible places on the planet, either the first or the second most amazing place in North America along with Yellowstone. I have been there most of August and into Sept., which can be gorgeous and clear. The longer you spend there, the more there is to see. Wolves, grizzlies, caribou just starting the rut, and this mountain that you have to tilt your head to look up at from 26 miles away. It also takes you a few days to overcome the grizzley fear/lack of trails before you dayhike into the tundra and the hills. You cannot spend too much time at Denali. Let me repeat that: You cannot spend too much time at Denali.

Second, Drive up the Haul Road to Prodhue Bay. There's really nothing in Coldfoot except the faintest dollop of civilization or in Wiseman, but you are just going to stay there maybe. You do get to drive across the Arctic Circle, over the Brooks Range, and see unbelievable scenery, particularly once you cross the Yukon, and maybe lots of wildlife. And you can just walk into the hills at the crest of Brooks Range--Atigun Pass if my memory serves--overlooking the vast flat coastal plain. Spectacular and once in a life-time experience.

Just my two cents.

I have been through Denali a half dozen times at least. I have spent a great deal of time all over this vast state. Prudhoe bay - Valdez; Glennallen is spectacular for the same and many varied reasons as Denali.

of all the places that you have mentioned I have been to them all. add to that all of the coastal villages in the Arctic. I choose the Arctic. I love the cold, the lack of people, and the excitement of it all. being so remote.

There is one more reason that I stay up here. go to my blog, in the search window on my blog just type in 'So Proud" and you might understand why I continue to live here. I give the entire simple secret away 3/4 through this very long post.

I'm going to alaska next month for two weeks--also going to Kenai (you might visit Homer?)....I stayed at camp Denali near Wonder Lake last visit to alaska--wonderful area to photograph---hike on the tundra, etc. It's at the end of the 80 mile road into the park. This time, in addition to a fly in flyfishing lodge in the Bristol Bay area, we are going to McCarthy staying at Kennecott glacier lodge. Lots to see in this area-namely the historic large Kennecott mine buildings. You can drive the McCarthy road of take a bush plane into McCarthy which is what we are going to do as rental companies don't allow their rent cars on this road into McCarthy. The Valdez area is also beautiful as is the alaska ferry ride from Valdez to Kenai area. eleanor

To head up to deadhorse is a dangerous ride. along the haul road. I have driven it many times. but the scenery is awesome. NOthing to really see once you leave the immediate Fairbanks area. soft rolling hills for many hours.

then you climb, the atagin pass. the scenery then becomes more to what you want to see. Cold Foot is just a truckstop. Deadhorse has hotel 150 a nite.. your better off sleeping in your vehicle. .your gonna have 24 hour sun no darkness at all.

We’re in the final stages of packing for the drive from AZ to AK, leaving this Friday (May 16th). We’ll be taking our time driving up thru Glacier National Park and going into Canada around May 22nd. The plan is to arrive Fairbanks on or around June 1st and stay there for 8 nights making a trip up to at least Coldfoot if not further north.

Our last day in Fairbanks will be Jun 8th when we go south to Denali where we’ll be there for 8 days before heading further south to Homer. We’ll be visiting Hallo Bay while in Homer then Seward on the return leg going home. Our last day in AK should be no earlier than Jun 29th.

We’re traveling in a Ford F350 short bed with a Lance pickup camper. We’ve got a small sign for Iron Creek Photography on both the camper and rear window on the truck so if anyone sees us please say hi!

We know that this will just be a teaser of a trip and we are already beginning to plan a return trip!

BTW, we plan on posting updates to the trip on our blog….

PS: Blasr--I live in Duxbury(though right now I am in far northern Newfoundland), or as it is sometimes known, Deluxebury or given how many ex-Brocktonites live there Brockton-by-the-Sea. I know Brockton well and have some good friends there. Have a great trip.

I did a trip June/July 2006 in a motorhome from Vancouver BC. Went through Dawson City-Lots of great mining history, then over the Top of the World Highway which is an amazing road along mountain top ridges, it was quite overcast when we went through but still worth the trip. Then made our way across the old Denali Hwy-8 from Paxon Lake which had a ton of great scenery even though we were still mostly in the clouds, not much traffic on this road and you can stop and camp anywhere along the way. Then into Denali for four nights that was one of the highlights of the trip, great hiking,amazing wildlife and actually got some clear shots of McKinnley. we stayed in a campground which is around 30 miles into the park...hard sided campers only allowed there though. If you make it down to Seward check out the Alaska Sealife Center http://www.alaskasealife.org/ they have an aviary full of Puffins etc. and you can take your camera inside for unobstructed shooting, I spent a couple hours in there.
From Homer I took a Bear Viewing trip across to Halo Bay, worth every penny, the other hilight of the trip wondering around amongst a bunch of wild Grizzlies.
Too many stops along the way to mention along the 11000 km trip. Next time I go up it will be in August as the fall colors will be showing then.
