so is Aperture 2.1 64 bit? No 3 meg cap>

I tried the Trial, the program is capable. The reason I use CS3 is to a large extent plug-ins.

So half the price, w/o memory restrictions? New equivalent capabilities. better integrated into the OS.

What's wrong with this picture?

The new Lightroom 2.0 Beta for Mac is 64bit. It installs as a 32 bit app by default and by option+clicking on the icon and selecting "get info" you can uncheck to tick box for 32 bit and the next time you start the program it runs in 64 bit.

Here is an insiders view on why CS4 will not be 64 bit on OS X.

So we have to wait a bit longer, because approximately 1 million lines of code, so the article, have to be transferred.

As for me, I'm not in a hurry to move to 64-bit, and there may not be too many photographers actually do have the hardware to take advantage of it.

I wonder what size this task of transferring an application into another programming environment has. Comparable to the move from OS 9 to OS X, CS to CS3?

And will there be gains from this move?

And if only to streamline the application. I have the impression that there are many features in Photoshop that are actually outdated and nobody uses them any more (e.g. the older sharpening methods that every book tells you not to use, but that are still there).

I have just come accross this piece of news after a few weeks out of office.

I am disapointed by this.

I do have the need (multi-layer large panorama images often in the 4+ GB sizes), and the hardware (16GB RAM).

This being said, PS CS3 on my hardware does a reasonnably good job at keeping up with large amount of data, but I am sure that a suitable 64 bits implementation should result in faster performance still. Whether Leopard is a suitable platform for this remains to be proven since my iMac with 2GB RAM is clearly both slower and less stable with 10.5.2 than it was with 10.4.10.

One thing is sure, I would most probably not have invested in 16GB RAM had I known about these developments a few months ahead of time. This Apple*Adobe non announced non move has cost me about 500 US$.

Cheers,
Bernard
