I'm considering upgrading my monitor to an NEC 2690WUXi but there's some uncertainty on NECs part whether the Syder2 Pro colorimeter accurately calibrates this monitor.

An NEC sales rep stated that the Spyder2 is not recommended for use on this monitor; however, this person could not discern if this applied to all Spyder2 products (Express, Pro, ect) or just a specific version. The NEC site states that the Spyder2...? has been tested and verified on the 2690WUXi but is not more specific.

Can any of you color Jedis clear this up for me?

I plan on purchasing SpectraviewII along with the monitor but if it's not necessary I'll only include the software and not the NEC co-branded i1 colorimeter.

Of course is the Spyder2 Pro is junk (or the i1 is that much better) on the 2690WUXi then the choice is obvious.

Eye One display 2 will work with NEC Spectraview 2. I bought both the colorometer AND the Spectraview 2 software from NEC thinking the colorometer was for tweaked for NEC wide gamut NEC 2690 WUXi. I was told that by NEC. I already had the Eye One display 2 from HP APS system.I believe that Digital Dog said that colorometer was all the same animal.In fact here is read me from Spectraview 2.I believe display 1 is also supported.

Yes (and no <g>). And I'm referring to an EyeOne Display-2 (EyeOne is a much older unit).

The matrix in most of the Colorimeters out there do not expect to be measuring a wide gamut unit as found here so the white point can be a bit off. Mine was about 500K off (not anything major but still, off). A Spectrophotometer has no such issues but is not as ideal for measuring darks. I actually measure the white point with my EyeOne Pro Spectrophotometer, build a custom white target, then use the colorimeter from there on. But I understand most users don't have both devices.

Bottom line: the colorimeter's can do a good job, it will be nice when their matrixes are updated (or can be updated afterwards) for these newer wide gamut devices. You might have to play around with WP values to get what you really desire because the target and what gets measured might be off a bit. A Spectrophotometer has no such issues but isn't anywhere as good at handling dark measurements. In the end, a specially mated colorimeter can't be beat (and was what NEC did with the LED wide gamut unit they had).

BTW, I'm seeing much more significant issues with the newer white LED MacBook's with Colorimeters. Last time I did a class, we had a student that had such a display and only the Spectrophotometer produced good results.

ah...so does that mean I should not bother with my ancient Eye One display? Then again, I won't be able to get spot on results either with the newer version 2. Does NEC's own hardware perform much better than?

You can certainly try the older unit if indeed its a 1 not a 2.

NEC's hardware? They OEM the pucks (actually an EyeOne Display 2) expect for the LED unit I mentioned which is a special build. The software/hardware bundle they have is a great deal if you can still get both (other than just the software).
