I hope nobody reads too much into this, but I was looking at the site recommended by Michael for William Neill's new e-book, and one photograph caught me by surprise a bit:

because it's almost identical (but reverse) to an image made by another photographer whose work I admire, Elizabeth Carmel, here:

I'm not suggesting one copied from the other by any means, just that they both seem to have had a similar vision of a similar place. Both are photographers with excellent work.

I've had the same vision, several different times. So have most Japanese landscape photographers. These are both very effective versions... 8-)

There´s also Francis Annet, a photographer who lives in Sarlat, France, who has books full of the same stuff; as has often been said, there is eff all new under the sun.

His great advantage (I have bought three of his books and some prints - not giclée - from his gallery in Sarlat) is that he lives in the quintessential tourist town and has the space to display his work. Passing trade is almost pushed into his lap. He is, of course, also good at what he does.

Edit: and what he did, six or so years ago when I last passed through the place, was Velvia and Nikon.

Hi,

I think that it is great that you are looking closely at other photographer's work. There are dozens of photographers that having photographed the dogwoods with the Merced River behind. This occurrence relates to a similar topic I wrote about in my OP column a couple of years ago:

I do believe I was an early explorer of this compositional combo. Here are some images of mine made in the late 1980s and early 1990s. On the other hand, I am sure I got the idea from someone else. There are alway overlaps in vision on similar subjects, but you can judge a photographer's creativity by viewing their work as a whole.

How refreshing to hear a well known photographer who isn't concerned with anyone shooting similar images to their own.

I had a travel brochure cover a few years back and another somewhat well known fellow, who led a tour for them, claimed I stole his image of an indian ruin. I knew he had done this ruin in black and white but was not aware it was also done in color.

Anyway, let me applaud your graciousness.
