I need a new card reader. I have a (very old) LaCie (USB) device that fails to mount my various Lexar 80-133x WA-enabled 1Gb/2Gb Flashcards.

I'm running an Intel Mac Pro currently with OS 10.5.3.

I'd prefer to use a card reader than continuing to connecting the cameras that write to these cards, if for no other reason than once in a great while I can't copy a file though I can see it in the download utility (EOS Capture).

Image Rescue won't "see" the cards when they're being read by a camera.

Lexar has a FW800 UDMA reader; anybody using one with no issues on Macs & OS such as I describe above? These are backwards compatible to non-UDMA flashcards I assume?

Hola
Have just bought this Lexar card reader and so far no problems with an Intel Mac with 10.5.4. It also reads Sandisk cf cards. I use LightRoom to download but I don't see why there should a problem with any other program.

My vote goes to Sandisk's Firewire card reader. I also had good experience from an "old" Lexar Fireware cr (not the purple one but the black version). I'm using it on G5 and Intel-powered Macs.

Same FW800 card reader on a PowerMac G4 FW800 (10.4) - no issues whatsoever, very pleased with it. This reader is expensive, but IMHO worth it.

I just bought a SanDisk Extreme III SDHC which comes bundled with a SanDisk MicroMate card reader. While it only reades SD cards, it's very small and light - about half the size of a matchbook. And much smaller than my cheap-o hama 35-in-1 (yeah sure) card reader.

I just bought the Lexar UDMA CF/SD USB reader.
It got good numbers on the robgalbraith.com card performance database, it gets good performance with CF and SDHC cards on my MacBook w/10.5.4 (and I don't even have any Lexar cards), and it's small and neat.

We also have a SanDisk Extreme USB reader (handles both CF and SD/SDHC) which works great. No UDMA support, but that just means it tops out at ~16 MB/s (it still works with UDMA cards, just not at top speed).

I get a lot of heavy use out of my gear and the Lexar FW800 CF Reader is a pain in the ass. On one hand it's super fast, on the other, I've had to replace it twice this year because the connection to the reader goes bad.

However, my Sandisk 12-in-1 USB 2.0 multi-card reader, while a lot slower, is very dependable and durable. I've never had to replace it. It also comes in handy when it comes time to download cards from others snapshot cameras, which I do often on set.
