My wife and I are off on a Land/Sea cruise to Alaska this Summer in July.

I would love anyone's insights as to what additional lenses to take for my Canon 40D.

I have a EF-S 17-55mm f2.8 IS USM, EF-S 10-22 f/3.5 - 4.5 USM, and a Canon EF 70-300mm f/4-5.6 IS USM.

I am very seriously thinking of adding a Canon EF 100-400mm f/4.5-5.6 L IS USM to give me a long reach. I know it is a bit heavy, so I will take my monopod.

Any other equipment suggestions? I will have my laptop and card reader.

We will not be hiking, all bus, ship, and train travel. Weight should not be a major issue.

Thanks,

i've used the 100-400 with 20D and 40D on several small ship cruises including alaska and hightly recommend it.

i've never had any problem hand-holding the 100-400 - in fact i think it's better than trying to use a monopod on a moving vessel.

i also recommend a polarizing filter

a 1.4x extender is a possibility as there are situations where you need all the reach you can get and more. however it's only useable with plenty of light - the 100-400 will autofocus (most of the time in good light, but slowly) with the last 3 lens pens taped

I just returned from a week cruise on the Inside Passage and took the 70-300 you have,100-400+monopod and a 17-35 WA.With the whales and a few
bears on shore, the extra 100mm was helpful.
