Is anyone getting stills out of 5D Mk2 video footage? How are you doing so and what are the software options?

If you're on a mac, then dump raw footage into iMovie. It let's you pull out any single video frame.

Thanks John, it's not actually for myself but for someone who is on a Mac. Would that allow her to pull out series of frames, effectively converting the whole movie to stills?

Getting a still frame in iMovie is from ctrl+clicking on the frame still and selecting from the pop up menu to capture the still. iMovie takes any footage and shows it in smaller segments for easy editing, every segment has the 30fps for however long the segment is. So a single frame in a 30fps sequence can be selected.

also in photoshop cs4- file-import-video frames to layers, (quicktime 7.1+ must be installed)

Thanks both. It's not for me but for someone who is on Mac, though on CS3. I did wonder about the CS4 option so that may be a key reason for her to upgrade.

Why does she need stills from the movie?
I'm just asking as frame grabs are not a good way to get stills. And why you have a stills photographer on film sets.

Partly it's because there were no still frames of the subject, and partly to see what can be done.

Bear in mind stills photographers are always employed to get stills on film sets, despite the sometimes considerable inconvienience.
The reasons why, certainly aren't nullified by the 5DII. Slow shuter speeds [the norm] make for poor stills and fast shutter speeds make for strobey video.
