Does anyone have recommendations for companies or individuals from which to order custom profiles?

Cathy's Profiles might be nice for a first-timer because she really holds your nose to the grindstone in regards to doing it right, her checklist is an exacting primer in printing profiling targets the right way. With that kind of backgrounding, you will be well versed in buying commercial profiles from anybody.

OTOH, if you plan to use a lot of different media or oddball media you should consider a Spyder 3 Print, Color Munkii, or other print profiling system. These are in the $300 range, about the cost of a dozen commercial profiles not counting shipping or waiting. I bought a Spyder 3 Print and never looked back except to wonder what took me so long. It's excellent and a big improvement over many of the canned profiles I was using, and at least equal to the custom ones.

I too second the thought behind Spyder Print. The price is good and you'll have the ability to tweek media as you go. It's also easier than I first thought.

I've only done a couple of profiles using the 225 color printout and they seem to look quite good. I would be interested in hearing from other user's experience with the 729 patch printouts and whether you saw a discernible difference. I've also found that using the guide is imperative to helping get good reads and doesn't slow things down.

We're speaking of the Spyder 3 Print profiler here.

I tried one 729 patch target, couldn't see any difference between that and the 225'er. If there is a difference, it is probably finer than the batch to batch differences in the media. I looked really hard in 3 images with subtle highlights and dark shadows and varying degrees of saturation, just no difference at all.

I never use the guide thing. The default target size is too small. Print the target patches BIG, and tape the print to the table.

I used to use John MacLean for all my profiling needs when I lived in CA. He is prompt and has good pricing. I never liked using the big guys; I always felt I was just a number or an account code with them.
I guess there is no good reason why I shouldn't still be using him except I'm on a different continent now.
