are there any other systems I should be considering
IMHO you just can't go wrong with good old X-Rite i1pro. I'm using it with my Epson 7880 and it gives decent results - in fact I managed to make such precise paper profiles, that I was even able to print proofs from Photoshop (without RIP), that passed Fogra MediaWedge v3.0 certification, so they mustn't be bad.
Take i1pro basic + RGB module, or i1Xtreme, download magnificient Bill Atkinson's 1728 patch targets:
