I'm new to this forum and wanted to start by making a significant announcement. After over a year of development, ColorQuick is about to introduce Veroproof, a free open source RIP. Veroproof has been certified by the IDEAlliance for GRACoL SWOP3 and SWOP5 for the EPSON R2880. It also works very well on the HP 8850, and HP 9180. And has been specifically designed to work well out of the box, without the need for spectrophotometers.

So what's the catch? Not much really. The software will be released as open source so you may use it free of charge. It has been specifically designed to work with our Veroproof brand paper (est. retail $5 per 13 x 19 sheet). But the paper comes with an added benefit. It has a preprinted "to the numbers" GRACoL or SWOP3/5 color bar on the top of each piece of proofing paper. The software inserts a second (reference) color bar along with the proof image. Just visually compare the two bars on any proof....and if they match, your proof is good.

Will other models be supported?
In addition to the Epson 3880 and HP 8850/9180 we will be considering requests for supporting other models. We will of course need some assistance in getting the color right, be we're willing to work with anyone to get certain popular models of printers working with the Veroproof software.

Our release 1.1 is due to be published on FRIDAY and will have the following improvements:

1) It will include the latest version of Ghostscript - leading to better rendering of spot color
2) The user interface is cleaner
3) Performance and networking features are improved

I'd be interested in this if it supported the Epson 3800. I expect you'll find a much larger user base with the 3800 than the 3880. I do some custom color cmyk work, and offering a match print would be a good addition to my services. And it might make a few bucks.

There is no reference on the site to the software you made this open source RIP with and there is no basic software to download for further development by third parties. Edit: I see references to LCMS, Argyll and Ghostscript and the manual refers once more to Argyll. Not a bad choice. But no reference to an open source print engine like GutenPrint.


This line:

If the two color control bars no longer match one another what is the solution then?
Free custom profile is one thing but will that be enough for consistent proofing?
