I want to permanently move a couple pcs I have for office use away from windows, and was considering Linux. I have no experience with Linux and need some help. All I need is a browser, word processing and excel. And pdf generation too. Nothing else. Could anybody advice me on this? Thanks.

The easiest thing would be to just go to Ubuntu.com and download the desktop DVD version, which contains Open Office. You can even boot from the DVD if you want to check it out without installing. But, you may want to wait for four days, when the next major Ubuntu update will be released.

Ubuntu seems to be the consumer choice these days.
