The step up ring refers to the filter size. This was a very hot topic with the original Dimage 7 and most agreed that using a 62 mm filter with a 49-62 mm stepup ring was best.

The manual is refering to focal length settings.

I'm puzzled (or just being thick?)

The Dimage a2 manual contains the following statement under the heading "Using Filters":

"Polarizing filters and close-up lenses may cause vignetting at the wide-angle range of the lens (below the 50mm mark on the zooming ring). With very powerful close-up lenses, such as a +3 or
Minolta No. 2, vignetting may be noticeable below 100mm. Most step-up rings will cause vignetting. The Minolta Step-up Adapter 49mm to 62mm can be used."

It's the penultimate sentence I don't get - won't using a step-up adapter with 62mm filters/lenses reduce vignetting ?
I'll be wanting to use a polarising filter at the short end of the fl
