Along with my recent purchase of a Nikon Ds70, I bought both an SB800 & SB600 Speedlight. I also got two Manfrotto Nano light stands with umbrella attachments. Since I can use the Ds70 built in flash as a "commander", this should give me three flashes for lighting. Because I do lots of People/Portrait/Glamour shots outdoors, this allowed me to cut costs on a "travel" lighting system. I was wondering if anyone knows of decent resources for information about using the CSL system that are a little easier to navigate than Nikon's manuals. The manuals seem to refer back and forth without covering much. Is anyone else using this system ?

This system (which I also have, using both D70 and D200), will only give you two flashes for lighting. If you use your on-camera flash in "commander" mode, it will only issue pre-flashes for the purposes of metering the exposure and setting the remote flash units, but will not fire for the main exposure.

One of the reasons I have a 3rd SB-800 on my shopping list! ;-)

Just FYI...

Thom Hogan has been working on an eBook, updated version of his Nikon Flash Guide for a few years now. That sounds like it will do the trick, when/if he ever gets it finished.

I emailed Thom a few days ago and here is what he said about his progress on the Flash Guide:

"Well, I completed it once, but I didn't like it, so I'm rethinking how
I want to do this. My new thinking is that there will be at least two
things necessary to replace NFG."

That unfortunately means it's gonna be some time before we see a new Nikon Flash Guide that covers CLS. He has no ETA.

I'm not aware of anyone else that is working on such a project, so I've been bugging Thom regularly (every few months) about when we'll see the NFG.

Just thought I would pass this on.
