The Canon R mirrorless camera has been certainly a hot topic of late. Every website and YouTuber has had a lot to say about this camera. Some love it, some don’t. At Luminous-Landscape we have covered this camera in several previous videos. We did a camera announcement video that was made the night the camera introduced. This was followed by a Canon EOS R – Interface and Menus Deep Dive video with Canon’s own Brandon Chin. Then, after a few days of using the camera, I did a Canon R Mirrorless – Hits and Misses video. There were certainly a number of things that as a major player in the mirrorless camera market the Canon R missed the mark on in my opinion.
We were provided a Canon R camera by Canon to use for six weeks. After returning from the press event I had gone into the hospital for a hip replacement procedure and was basically taken out of commission for 8 weeks. Thus, I turned the Canon R camera over Michael Durr our videographer and asked him during my time of recovery to have fun with this camera with the thought that he and I would sit down and do a small On The Rocks episode about his time with the camera when I was feeling better.
Normally we would do an On The Rocks with Jody Grober and Phil Gibson, but the timing didn’t allow us to get this done. So, Michael and I sat down in my kitchen, popped open a bottle of whiskey and we talk about the Canon R mirrorless camera.
Michael and I have a conversation about his use of the Canon R for an extended time. While many of us were critical of the camera when we first saw it, it seems that the Canon R is a camera that needs to grow on you. Michael likes it and made some really good use of it.
I think this episode will give you a chance to hear from a Canon user using a new Canon camera. Were reviewers too critical of this camera? Hard to tell. I know there were things that bothered me and I pointed them out. But for Michael, he was pretty upset when we had to return the camera to Canon.
