About Luminous-Landscape

I startedThe Luminous Landscapein 1999 after my friend Chris Sanderson suggested that I take some of the magazine articles I had written over the years and repurpose them for the web. “What do I know about publishing on the web“, I replied?

It wasn’t long though before I had a few articles formatted and had learned enough HTML to create a small web site. The rest, as they say, is history.

The history though is not what I had anticipated at the time. I thought it would be a little hobby web site – something to pass the time while I looked at what I was going to do next. (I had just sold a hi-tech company that I had co-founded ten years before, and wasn’t quite ready for retirement).

The reality is that after I posted my old articles fromPhoto Techniquesmagazine, where I had been a Contributing Editor, and other magazines, I started writing new ones and also started to receive contributions from other authors. The years have just flown by. This site now has more than 4,500 pages with essays, reviews, editorials and images.

Workshops became another major aspect of LuLa’s evolution. I had taught photography, Cibachrome printing, and view camera technique at the community college level for years, and when I started to travel to exotic locations for my own photography it seemed a natural thing to bring others along. We have now conducted photography workshops and expeditions to every continent, including more than a dozen countries and some of the world’s most exotic locations.  We set ourselves apart from others in what we offer and how our workshops are run.  We will be launching a fresh series of workshops over the coming months and do hope that we will be able to meet you on one of these journeys.

Today LuLa is going though another stage in its evolution. My good friend of many years, Kevin Raber – previously a Vice President at Phase One, the world’s leader in high resolution, medium format digital photography  – has now joined LuLa as its new CEO. Kevin takes responsibility for revamping the web site, our new video services, advertising sales, and organizing and running and leading our workshops worldwide.

I will continue writing and reviewing for the site, and Chris continues as he has since day one, in shooting and editing the preponderance of our videos.

As we enter the middle of our second decade  The Luminous Landscape continues to evolve. Our readership runs more than 1.2 Million visitors a month from almost every country on the planet. You are one of them, and Chris, Kevin and I appreciate you visiting here, whether you’ve just discovered LuLa or you’ve been a long-time friend. Welcome, and welcome back. The days ahead are going to be as interesting, fun and informative as those past.

Photography is my passion and has been for 45 plus years. My career in photography has allowed me to travel the world, meet some of the most interesting people on the planet and see things I could never have dreamed of. My goal is to share the passion of pictures taking through photographs and teaching with as many people as I can hoping it brings them as much joy and happiness as it has me. I do this through Rockhopper Workshops and other projects as well as teaching at my Gallery in Indianapolis.
