Drooling Moose — Algonquin Park, Ontario. May, 2004

Canon 10D with Canon 28-300mm f/5.6L IS lens

For the past several years, each spring I have traveled toAlgonquin Provincial Parkin North-Central Ontario, Canada, to photograph moose. In April and May the Moose come out of the deep woods to lick the salt used to keep the highway open during the winter. This means that on some days, there are as many as a dozen or more moose easily photographable from the highway. Some are at a distance, requiring the use of long lenses, while others can be so close that they walk across the road right in front of your car.

Moose Crossing. Algonquin Park — June, 2003

Photographed with a Canon 1Ds and 70-200mm f/2.8L IS lens @ 200mm. ISO 400
Image modified with Gaussian Blur Overlay technique

I have gotten to know the best locations and times for viewing moose at Algonquin in the early spring, and this year I have planned a small exclusive expedition to photograph them, and to combine it with a master-class workshop.

What is amaster class? Simply an opportunity for a small group of advanced photographers to get together and to critique and share their work with each other. I will be providing one-on-one print critiques as well as leading the group discussions. In addition to the portfolio reviews, sessions will be held, based on the requests and interests of the group, on digital workflow as well as other aspects of image processing techniques. These will take place at our motel during the days, as the moose are most active at dawn and dusk. Mid-day will be spent in these sessions as well as doing general landscape and wildlife photography within and nearby the Park.

Our base of operations will be theAlgonquin Lakeside Inn, a comfortable lodge just outside the park.
