Samsung with Plenty Of Cameras To Try At Their Booth

Our Last Day

It’s hard to believe it is now Friday and  for us, the last day of the show.  We have logged a lot of miles and seen a lot of things.  If you are a photographer you owe it to yourself to come to a Photokina once in your life.  What is amazing is the money that is spent on some of these booths and the amount of photo gear that is on display.  There are literally thousands of people.  Walking into some of the booths is like walking into a Las Vegas casino.  You can’t find your way out.  Nevertheless, you’ll quickly get your fill of everything photographic and after a few days – just like in Vegas – it’s probably enough.

We’ll start our report today from the amazing Leica booth and a video interview with Stefan Daniel, Director of Product Management for Leica. Before we get into the video we will comment again on just how cool Leica is and how much they understand what photography is about.   Ten years ago people wondered if Leica would even be around the next year.  Now, due to in large part the passion of Andreas Kaufmann, Leica is not only one of the strongest camera companies there is but is arguably by far the most prestigious.  Mr. Kaufmann poured his heart and soul into the company and the passion he had for the product.  There is no question that as you walk around the Leica booth and look at their cameras and accessories, Leica exudes quality and prestige.  Leica knows its customer and it is quite evident by their products and prices.  But what is most amazing, and Michael and I are very impressed by this, is that Leica is totally committed to the photographer.  The photography gallery space that Leica has created is as large as a football field.  There are some of the finest examples of photography in this gallery that I have ever seen.  Thank you Leica for making this year’s Photokina special.

Does Samsung Get It?

The Samsung NX1 In Michael’s Hands

What do you think of when you hear the word Samsung?  Washing Machines, Dryers, Electronics, Phones?  Now you need to think something else: cameras.  Yes, it looks like Samsung has a camera and from what we can tell from our short hands-on time, it actually may be a camera to pay attention to.  The specs on this camera are crazily impressive.  We picked it up and shot 15 frames in a second.  You can’t do this on any other camera in it’s price range.  There is 4K video capability and a number of interesting lenses to get the cameras off the ground.  This camera will find its way to wedding and portrait photographers as well as sports shooters.  Samsung is missing really long glass but they have a large number of lenses that are available at launch and will surely have more news on new lenses over the coming months.

We sat down with Loring von Palleske, Senior Category Manager and learned more about this new camera  and what to expect. Samsung has promised us some test cameras when they are final production units and we’ll g et the chance to run the NX1 through it’s paces to see what this impressive camera is like in the real world.

Almost Forgot About Camera Bags . . .

The Tamrac – GuraGear Bag Booth

You Couldn’t Even Get Into The ThinkTank Booth

Just about every popular camera bag maker was present at the show.  You couldn’t even get into the the ThinkTank booth there were so many people.   The Tenba booth was always busy.  Specialty bag companies like F-Stop Bags were present with models walking around the show with their backpacks.  Michael and I are bag addicts.  We have shelves full of bags from just about every bag maker you can think of.  One of our favorite bags though is Gura Gear.  On this trip I have a GuraGear shoulder bag for my computer, iPads and everything else as well as a GuraGear backpack for my Olympus kit that I brought with me.

We visited with Gregory Schern, President of GuraGear to talk to him about his new acquisition of the Tamrac line of bags.

Here are some quick shots of various booths we visited today.  We made sure we stopped by at some of the paper booths especially Canson and Hahnemühle since Michael and I print on these papers.  We took a quick walk through the Canon booth and it was jammed.  We also stopped by quickly at ARCA Swiss and ALPA.

Photography is my passion and has been for 45 plus years. My career in photography has allowed me to travel the world, meet some of the most interesting people on the planet and see things I could never have dreamed of. My goal is to share the passion of pictures taking through photographs and teaching with as many people as I can hoping it brings them as much joy and happiness as it has me. I do this through Rockhopper Workshops and other projects as well as teaching at my Gallery in Indianapolis.
