The Luminous Landscape Photographs – A 10 Year Retrospective Book & Print Offer

I have just (May, 2007) published a 10 year retrospective book of my photographs covering the years 1997 – 2007. This book contains 80 pages, with a total of 70 individual full page plates. The pages of the book are 12 X 12″ with most images extending to a maximum of roughly 10″ X 10″ in area.

Dunes and Deserts

Plate 1

Red Dragon:2006. In Deadvlie, Namibia lies a 700 year old dried-out lake bed, with petrified tress surrounded by red sands walls. At dawn, as the sun touches the sand for the first time the valley bursts into flame, turning the trees’s skeletons into dreamlike apparitions.

Warm Dunes:1997. Death Valley’s sand dunes always fascinate, especially in the warmth of late afternoon light.

Dune Ripples:1997. Ripples and their shadows turn Death Valley’s dunes into a garden of abstract art.

Equality:2003. Well after sunset the light in the sky and on the dunes equalizes, producing a unique palette.

Tumbleweed Dunes: 2001. A secret and sacred area for the Navahos within Monument Valley

Dunes and Cloud: 2006. 600 foot high dunes in Namibia with a lone cloud as punctuation.

Alien Marbles: 2001. Deep in the interior of Death Valley lies a dried lake bed upon which large boulders mysteriously slide during the night.

Moonrise, White Sands: 2000. The first light of dawn with a full moon setting behind the dunes.

Mountains and Atmospherics

Impossible Clouds: 2004. Glacier N. P. At a gallery show where this print was hanging I was told by a gentleman who claimed to be a meteorologist that this photograph had to be a Photoshopped composite, since clouds didn’t appear together like this in nature. My only reply was that God then must be a certified Photoshop expert, because I couldn’t claim any such credit.

Mountain Mist: 2006. Huangshan, China. The Yellow Mountains in China present a landscape that appears to be straight from ancient Chinese scroll paintings.

Forest Fire: 2003. The Rockies. Forest fires can cause vast devastation, but ultimately they are responsible for the renewal of the forest. They also can create a stark beauty.

Geyser Glow: 2002, Yellowstone NP. At -30C any moisture freezes instantly on contact with trees, cameras, and exposed skin.

Iceland

Plate 28

Rainbow Lake: 2001, Iceland. We had been driving along the rainy east coast of Iceland for three days. Heading into the mountains in hope of some respite from the rain, we emerged from the clouds to see a rainbow forming over a glistening lake in a dark volcanic valley. Moments after this image was made, the rainbow disappeared and the clouds descended again.

Ringed Cloud: Iceland, 2000. Driving in the far north of Iceland at approximately 1am, we saw this lenticular cloud being illuminated from beneath by the midnight sun. A lone farmhouse sits on a hillside beneath it.

Circular Rainbow: Iceland, 2004. Icebergs calve off a glacier into a small lake on the southern coast of Iceland. At midnight, just as the sun is setting for a short while, a rainbow forms, creating a full circle with it’s reflection.

Green and Black: Iceland, 2004. Algae in a small lake, with hardy grass growing out of the rich volcanic sand.

Snow Tooth: Iceland, 2004. On a high mountain pass at dawn, the last remnant of a melting snow field.

Highway and Cloud. 2006, Iceland. Sometimes when searching for the interesting one finds the unique. Driving in Iceland, a land of exotic photographic opportunities, I was struck by the simple graphic nature of this cresting hill and cloud.

The Black Church. 2003, Iceland. This famous old church is usually closed, but on the day we were there the caretakers daughter was playing in the doorway as I set up for an architectural shot. Count the triangles.

A Walk in the Clouds: Florida, 2001. Photographed from a low angle, this road bisects the sky, with sunrise-warmed clouds below and blue sky above.

Cable Gang: Bangladesh, 2054. At the ship-breaking yards at Chittagong gangs of men drag heavy steel cables out to ships which are then steam winched closer to shore at high tide, where they are then cut apart for scrap.

Fishing at Dawn: 2005, Guilin, China. For a thousand years fisherman have fished this river with their reed boats and cormorants.

Dune Walk: 2006, Namibia. Four Himba tribes women walk the crest of a dune in the far north of the country, near the Angolan border. The Himba are one of the last nomadic tribes left in Africa.

To Market: 2005, Bangladesh. A horse-drawn card loaded with cabbages heads to market, while three woman walk in the fog toward the local textile factory to begin their day.

Laundry Day: 2005, Huangshan. China. Porters carry all food, supplies and laundry up and down a 2,000 ft mountain.

Massai Waiting: 2003, Tanzania. In the heat of the Serrengetti a group of Massai wait for transpiration in the shade of a tree. Taken at 1000mm.

Workers

The Gleaners: 1997, Ontario. Farm workers preparing the field on a spring morning.

Sewing: 2005, Shanghai, China. A tailor plies his trade at an open shop in the old quarter of Shanghai.

Close Shave: 2005, Shanghai, China. Handling the customer a bit more roughly than might be expected, a street barber gives a straight-razer shave.

Mondrian Sacks: 2005, Bangladesh. Workers unload a barge carrying bags of rice, and stack them under colourful tarps.

Carrying Sand: 2005, Bangladesh. Wicker baskets full of sand are carried off a barge near a cement plant. Manual labour is less expensive than machines in Bangladesh.

Wall Painting: 2002, Burrano, Italy. One of the most colourful towns in all of Italy, Burrano is just a short ferry ride from Venice.

The Moment of Truth: 2004, Seville, Spain. The instant that the bull is dispatched. Love it or hate it, there is a dreadful beauty to the corrida.

Santorini Laneway: 2005, Santorini, Greece. A child runs though the ancient cobblestone streets of this island town in the Aegean.

The Hand of Man

The Brickworks: 2003, Toronto. An abandoned brick factory not far from downtown Toronto. Shafts of sunlight penetrate the gloom though holes in the roof, illuminating an antique brick press.

Pouring Slag:2005, Burlington, Ontario. The steel town of Burlington, Ontario at sunset. I pulled off the highway just in time to capture this scene.

Pink and Blue: 2006, Kolmanskop, Namibia. For fifty years the sand has invaded the abandoned diamond mining town of Kolmanskop. This room is one of hundreds filled with drifting sand.

Collapsed Tank: 2007, South Georgia: A century-old whale oil tank in collapse at an abandoned whaling station.

Wildlife

A Threat: 2003, Tanzania. A lioness guarding a group of cubs issues a threat.

Long Necks: Giraffes grace the tree tops in almost perfect camouflage.

Taking Flight: 2002. Bosque del Apache, New Mexico. Sandhill Cranes wait their turn to fly as a huge flock of snow geese take to the air at dawn.

Penguin Pool: 2007, Antarctica. Startled by our approaching ship, four penguins dive into a pool formed inside a passing iceberg.

Jellyfish and Penguin: 2007, Antarctica. A giant Lion’s Mane Medusa floats serenely in a glacial bay while a penguin leaps in the background.

Ancient Fisherman: 2005, Bay of Bengal, Bangladesh. Looking much as they must have for the past thousand years, fisherman sail against the rising sun on the Bay of Bengal.
