Sunset Lake is not a spot that most people have heard of. The reason for that is simple, it’s a long way off the beaten path. It is in fact a 12 mile hike from the nearest trailhead on the Idaho side of the Tetons. It is a pretty, but not spectacular little lake. It does have a secret, wildflowers. In the first week of August the best wildflower displays in all of Wyoming can be found around sunset lake .

If you love wildflowers, plan a backpacking trip to Sunset Lake the first week in August. It is in the national forrest so no permit is needed.

The fire is best in mid to late September when the sun sets behind Mt Moran. Moose are often seen at both sunrise and sunset in the river.
