It was a calm, sunny, early July morning in Tracy Arm Cove located between Ketchikan and Juneau in southeast Alaska.  With wife Caroline at the helm, we had reached the northern apex of our 3 month cruise and had just pulled anchor to start back on our sailboat down the coast of British Columbia to our home in Seattle.  Tracy Arm was one of the most beautiful places we had ever sailed to on our vessel.  For anyone who loves nature and photography, you just cant beat a Fjord laden with sculpted icebergs and “bergy bits” of all shapes and sizes, and so many shades of blue.
In the distance, almost two nautical miles away, I spotted a small dot atop a huge berg.  We changed course to investigate, and as we got ever closer, that dot proved to be an eagle.

It was one of those very special, unforgettable moments when you hold your breath and carefully press the shutter button —  just hoping to capture the spectacular light and some of the beauty in front of the lens.  Very soon after this shot, the eagle took flight and headed south.  We followed.

Shot with: Canon 5D Mark III, EF 100-400/4.5-5.6L IS II with 1.4 extender II at 140mm, f 8.0, 1/2000th second.
