In early December, 2005, I will be leading a photographic expedition to Antarctica. This trip will last for 12 days, departing from Ushuaia, Argentina at the tip of South America bound for the Antarctic Peninsula.
We will cross the turbulent Drake Passage and then spend a week in the calm waters of an Antarctic spring, going ashore in Zodiacs two to three times each day to photograph the unique landscape and wildlife found at the bottom of the world. Our voyage is operated byQuark Expeditions, one of the most experienced operators of adventure tours in the Antarctic. Quark’s ship is a converted Russian research vessel designed for Antarctic conditions and specially fitted-out for this type of expedition. Quark will dedicate this ship to our expedition, and all 47 passengers will be members of our workshop / expedition. Our itinerary will be designed to maximize photographic opportunities.
In addition to the adventure of this trip and the opportunity to do photography in a very special environment, this trip will offer a unique learning experience. In addition to internationally renowned photographer, educator and author Michael Reichmann, five other world-class photographers and digital imaging experts will be onboard to act as your guides, consultants and teachers.
The five of us will be providing Photoshop, digital imaging and ink-jet printing seminars on a regular basis throughout the trip. We will also be shooting alongside workshop members every day as well as being available for one-on-one instructional sessions throughout the trip.
The photographic as well as educational opportunities on this trip are unlike anything ever offered before.

John Paul Caponigro
John Paul combines his background in painting with traditional and alternative photographic processes using the digital platform. He is
respected internationally as one of the most prominent artists working with digital media processes. Exhibited internationally, his work resides in numerous private and public collections including Princeton University, the
Houston Museum of Fine Arts, and the Estée Lauder collection.
Well respected as an authority on working creatively with the digital platform and fine digital printing John Paul teaches both privately in his studio and internationally at prominent workshops including The Santa Fe Photographic Workshops and The Maine Photographic Workshops. He lectures
frequently at universities, museums, and conferences.
John Paul’s work has been published widely. Reviews have appeared in numerous periodicals and books including Art News and The Ansel Adams Guide. He is a contributing editor for Camera Arts and View Camera and a columnist for Photo Techniques. His book Adobe Photoshop Master Class (Adobe Press, 2003) is now in its second edition.
John Paul is one Canon’s Explorers of Light and an Epson’s Stylus Pro. His clients include Adobe, Apple,Canon, Epson, Greta g-MacBeth, Kodak, and Sony.
Stephen Johnson is a photographer, designer and teacher. He has been photographing since 1973, and lecturing on photography since 1977. His photography explores the concerns of a landscape artist working in an increasingly industrialized world. His work has also concentrated on refining the new tools of digital photography and empowering individual artists to use these tools to express their ideas. He has been working in digital photography since 1989 and wrote the duotone curves that ship with Adobe Photoshop. His books include At Mono Lake, the award winning and critically acclaimed The Great Central Valley: California’s Heartland and Making a Digital Book. Johnson’s photographs have been exhibited, published and collected internationally. He has lectured extensively on digital imaging in both Europe and the United States. His recent work includes a major new endeavor, With A New Eye, a groundbreaking all digital photographic look at the national parks.
Michael is a fine-art landscape photographer with an international reputation as a photographic educator. He is contributing editor toPhoto Techniquesmagazine, the publisher and primary author ofThe Luminous Landscapeweb site, and of more than 300 published articles, tutorials and essays on photography.
Michael has conducted numerous field workshops throughout the U.S. and Canada, as well as in Costa Rica, Tanzania and Iceland. He is a frequent invited speaker at international conferences and photography seminars.
Michael is a beta tester for several software and hardware firms, and is also a consultant on product design to several companies.
His photographs have appeared in numerous books, monographs and portfolios, as well as gallery exhibitions in the U.S. and Canada. Michael’s fine art prints are in both private and government collections worldwide.
North America’s most prolific corporate, editorial and stock photographers. He is Co-Founder of D-65 LLC and the Founding President of the Editorial Photographers Group (EP). Seth is greatly in demand for his beautiful graphic images in both natural and created light. Resnick has been published in the world’s most prestigious magazines. His credits include over 2500 publications worldwide and his clients constitute a virtual list of Corporate America.
Resnick who shoots exclusively digitally, is one of 65 photographers worldwide named as a Canon Explorer of Light. He has given over 125 lectures to industry organizations such as American Society of Media Photographers (ASMP), Advertising Photographers of America (APA), Professional Photographers of America (PPA), Advertising Photographers of New York (APNY), colleges and universities.
Seth is also an alpha and beta tester and feature consultant for Adobe Photoshop, He is on the Advisory Board for WorkbookStock.com, a technology consultant to Epson and founding member of (CVA) Coalition of Visual Artists and a founding partner of PixelGenius. Seth Resnick is as an industry consultant to photo agencies, software companies and is frequently quoted by industry magazines.

A film and television Director for thirty years, Christopher has spent most of his career making television commercials for N. America and Europe. He was awarded a Gold Lion at the Cannes Advertising Film Festival in 1981, and became well-known for multiple award-winning work with children & animals. His work has interrupted regular programming in many countries & languages.
Among his non-commercial directing work, Christopher directed the ’92
EMMY-nominated Alligator Pie, a 50 minute Children’s Special aired on
the CBC. The show was also a GEMINI nominee and won the Best Production
for Children at the Yorkton Festival in 1992.
Having trained early in his career as a cameraman and editor, Christopher picked up the camera and computer ‘guillotine splicer’ again in 2000 to create, with Michael Reichmann, the Luminous Landscape Video Journal – a quarterly video magazine on Photography published on DVD.
When not climbing the learning curve of Apple’s Final Cut Pro, he spends his spare time plotting fresh adventures with Michael and saving money to pay for his dog’s vet bills.
Jeff Schewe, a summa cum laude graduate of Rochester Institute of Technology, has been an award winning Advertising Photographer in Chicago for over 25 years. Jeff’s photographic specialty has been problem solving and his move into digital imaging allows absolute control over the final photographic image. He has been doing digital imaging for over 14 years and is widely known and respected in the digital imaging community as a leading pioneer in the field. Jeff is a feature consultant and alpha tester for Adobe Photoshop.
Thomas Knoll, the original author of Photoshop and also the author of Adobe Camera Raw, will be a member of this workshop / expedition and has kindly offered to conduct Camera Raw seminars for those that are interested.
Kevin Raber, the Vice President of Sales for Phase One, is a member of this voyage as well, and has offered to provide demonstrations and discussion on Phase One’s Capture One software as well as their latest generation of medium format digital backs.
Jean Paul, Stephen, Michael, Seth and Jeff will each be conducting seminars on shooting technique, digital imaging processing, inkjet printing, colour management and more — throughout the voyage. Each day will see a different presentation, and presentations will be repeated. Chris is the director / cameraman for theLuminous Landscape Video Journal, and a professional filmmaker and videoographer. He will be available for instruction to anyone shooting video as well who those who wish one-on-one instruction or advice on video topics.
All of the instructors will be shooting along-side you each day, and available for individual discussions about field technique and esthetics. Participants will be asked to bring a small portfolio of their work (optional) and then have a one-on-one print discussion and critique with the instructor of their choice.
In other words, this group of experienced and talented professionals will be available to you for the full 12 days, to work along-side you, and to provide whatever advice and instruction is requested.
Who is it For?
This trip is for photographers of all capabilities. Professionals seeking to work alongside like-minded colleagues as well as photographers with more limited experience are all welcome. The only requirement will be a passion for photography and adventure.
Spouses as well as non-photographers are also welcome because the ship’s expedition leader and staff are experts on the Antarctic, and extensive seminars and non-photographic learning opportunities will be available from the ship’s expedition leader.
The crossing between the tip of South America and the Antarctic Peninsula is across the Drake Passage. This stretch of ocean can be rough, and it is not uncommon for people to become sea sick. There are medications and other preventatives that can be taken. But, if the passage is rough, sea sickness may not be avoidable for some people. Some crossings are free of rough water, others are not. There’s no way of knowing beforehand.
The good news is that once we are in calm Antarctic waters the ship will be stable, and no one should feel either after-effects or ongoing seasickness. My feeling is that the adventure is worth a day or two of possible discomfort. You’ll have to make that decision for yourself.

Naturally, we will need your consent to be filmed. Once you have registered for the Workshop we will be sending you a Release Form. This will signify your permission to be included in the filming that will be done during the workshop. We will, of course, be providing you with complimentary copies of whatever video or print material comes out of this. Of course this will provide you with a professional quality video record of this trip, something that no other workshop can provide.
Finally, I want to assure you that the filming of the workshop will in no way interfere with the workshop and the time that we spend together. Chris is an experienced filmmaker and will be shooting in an unobtrusive documentary style. Of course, as an experienced cinematographer and director Chris will be available as another resource person to all Workshop members. If you have problem with being filmed during the workshop please ask me for more information, or consider taking an alternative workshop.
The Cost and The Timing
The arrival date is November 30, 2005 in Ushuaia, on the southern tip of Argentina. The trip itself will last for 12 days, and at least a couple of travel days will need to be added for going to and returning from Argentina, depending on where in the world that you live.
The cost of the trip is all inclusive. That means all transfers, a hotel in Ushuaia on November 30, all food and beverages (including beer, wine and spirits during meals) while aboard ship. Also included are a waterproof backpack, and gratuities for the ship’s crews members.
Arrive in Argentina, bring your camera gear, and we’ll take care of the rest. Quark even provides parkas and boots, which saves you the need to pack these bulky articles.
There is an optional two night camping excursion in Antarctica for up to 20 people. There is no extra charge for this exciting option.
Pricing is on a per person basis. There is no difference in price for photographer and non-photographers.
There are five types of rooms aboard ship, and therefore five price levels. Availability in each class is limited and rooms will be sold on a first-come first-served basis. Triple rooms are suitable for three men or three women sharing. Doubles are suitable for couples, or two men or two women sharing. Individuals traveling alone will be paired with others of the same sex. There are no single accommodations available. Other than the type of sleeping accommodation aboard ship, all other aspects of the voyage are identical between pricing levels. All amounts shown are in $U.S.

— Twin with Shared facilities:$8,395 per person (14 berths available). 7 Cabins.
— Twin with Private facilities:$9,095 per person (18 berths available). 9 Cabins.
— Superior with Private facilities:$9,995 per person (2 berths available / twin bed). 1 Cabin.
— Suite with Private facilities:$10,395 per person (2 berths available / twin bed). 1 Cabin.
You will note that this adds up to 39 passengers. There will also be 6 instructors, and 2 manufacturer’s reps, for a total company of 47 people. There is also a Quark Expedition leader and the ship’s crew.
Airfare from wherever you live to and from Buenos Aires is not included, and these travel arrangements will be your responsibility and at your expense. By way of example, the typical cost of an economy seat from New York to Buenos Aries is roughly $1,200. A group flight from Buenos Aires to and from Ushuaia is included in your fee. You will likely need to spend a night in Buenos Aires at either end of the trip, depending of course on the schedule of flights to and from wherever you live and your additional travel plans. The cost of these hotels isnot included.

December 1: Free day in Ushuaia or an optional tour ofTierra del Fuego National Park. 7pm ship sailing. There is no additional charge for this tour.
December 2 — December 10:Sailing and exploring Antarctica
December 11:Arrive Ushuaia early morning. 9:40am group flight to Buenos Aires. Connection to flights out of Buenos Aires after 5pm feasible.
Note that sailing times are fixed and there is no possibility of accommodating anyone who misses the sailing time on December 1.
All photographers attending the workshop will be provided with aLowePro Dryzonecamera equipment backpack. This will be mailed to you well prior to the trip, and will be yours to keep. You will also be provided with a parka suitable for Antarctic conditions. This will be provided to you onboard ship and will be yours to keep after the expedition. The loan of rubber wading boots will be available. These are needed for getting on and off the zodiacs when going ashore.
Payment of U.S. $3,000 per person is due upon booking. This payment must be made within 10 days of your booking, or your reservation will be forfeit. Credit cards can not be accepted. Personal checks are welcome, but returned or NSF checks will mean that your reservation will be cancelled. Payments will be made directly toQuark Expeditions.
The balance of your payment (depending on berth type selected) will be due on or before May 1, 2005. If you cancel your booking after September 30, 2004, a refund of your payment, less $500, will be made. If you cancel at any time after May 1, 2005, a refund of your payment (less $1,000) will be only possible if we are able to resell your berth(s) to someone else.
