It’s time to get back out there and to get back to Antarctica. My last trip to Antarctica was February 2020, and we returned from that trip two weeks prior to the world shutting down. A lot has happened since then and we have endured shutdowns, cancellations, travel bans and so much more.
I had a trip scheduled to Antarctica in February 2022 and that was canceled a few months ago because of the reluctance of passengers to book trips in these times and being able to rely on an infrastructure to support the tourist industry in Chile and elsewhere. Travel restrictions, mandates, vaccinations, and more were all over the place as to what is required to enter different countries.

Working with Antarctica 21 who I have been doing these trips since 2005, I have now booked a trip for Photographers Only for February 11-18, 2023. I am very excited about this trip and this is what many photographers were asking for.
This trip is for photographers only, so it will be intense and non-stop as we travel to the most photogenic locations at the best time of day for light and subject. This isn’t a leisurely cruise we will fill it with picture taking, lectures, and more. You might not sleep much.

You will enjoy amazing photography, new friends, great instruction, wonderful food on one of the most famous and capable ships in the Antarctica fleet, the Ocean Nova.
I have sailed the Ocean Nova on countless trips in both the south and northern polar regions. Its ice-hardened hull, along with the finest crew there is will get us places no other cruises go. The staterooms are comfortable, the food incredible and the ship’s crew has been on board as long as I can remember.

The expedition team looks forward to a trip like this as they are all photographers too and will work hard to make sure your experience is second to none. Each day the expedition leader myself and other photo instructors will confer with the ship’s captain to chart out a course based on light, timing, and weather to get you where you need to be for amazing photographs.
The Videos
Below are some videos that should orient you to what to expect on this trip. We made these on our last trip in February 2020. Michael Durr, our video producer, beautifully produced them. If these don’t make you sign up immediately for this trip, then we must be doing something wrong.

Before or After The Trip
I always arrive in Punta Arenas a few days early. I like to make sure I get there with a buffer for any canceled flights, lost luggage, etc.. Once I arrive in Punta Arenas, I take anyone from our trip that are interested for an optional tour of the area. There is a lot to photograph in Punta Arenas, like the cemetery and coastline. I can arrange the tour and depend on how many are in the group, we will split the costs for a guide and transportation. It’s a great way to start the trip out. More details on this will be emailed to attendees prior to the trip.
After the trip, I spend an extra day in Chile before flying home. There is a Holiday Inn at the airport. I book a room there and enjoy a good rest. The following day I hire one of my favorite guides for a tour of Valparaiso, Chile. This is a coastal town built on several hills and is famous for its graft. My guide will get us on the money for getting the best images. You can see what our last trip was like HERE.
