For my RAW image processing, I use Capture One. I’ve been using Capture One since version 3, and I’ve never looked back. The two big names in RAW processing today are Capture One and Adobe’s Lightroom and Camera RAW. I’m very good at Lightroom (although Jeff Schewe may say otherwise), and I use both programs. However, my main go-to RAW processor is Capture One, and there are several reasons for that.
First and foremost is that it is fast and powerful. Scrolling of images, responsiveness to sliders, and quality of output make Capture One excel over other products. In addition—and unlike Lightroom—the interface is completely customizable. So, you can design the interface to work well with your workflow. I’ll do more on the interface in a future article. You can buy Capture One outright, or you can subscribe. The most powerful feature, though, is the ability to work with sessions and catalogs. This makes working in the field and migrating files over to your main system on return very simple.
When Lau Norgaard and Drew Altdoerffer visited, we sat down and did several videos. In this video, Lau and I sit down and talk about what’s new with Capture One 12 as well as what’s behind some of the changes and new features. Lau is the Chief Visionary for Capture One, and he designs both software and hardware with the future in mind. His attention to the small details sets Capture One apart.
Next week, Drew and I will share two videos on how we both use Capture One for image processing. We don’t see eye-to-eye on all aspects of image processing, but we both get to the same place in the end.
