Fuji GFX 50S

At least once a month I try to do a Sunday road trip with my wife Debra.  She’s a passionate photographer like me and we enjoy heading out to a destination and looking for adventure on the way.  On Sunday, May 7th 2017 we decided to take the Fuji GFX 50S out for a road test.  Fujifilm was kind enough to send me a GFX 50S along with a 63mm, 32-63mm and a 120mm Macro lens as a review unit.  I have had the camera for about 4 weeks now and will have an in-depth review in the coming weeks.  I thought it would be fun though to share the images from the road trip and some initial impressions and let you decide what you think, at least image-wise of the GFX 50S.

I also wanted to try a few comparison shots against the Sony a7r II.  With less that 8 megapixels separating the two, I was curious if you could see a difference.  You can be the judge and view the images below.

Many of the images in this article use the Prodibi View at 100% feature we have now been using for a while.  Where indicated you can click on an image and you’ll be presented a window with the image in it.  You can then click on the image up to 100% and also pan around the image to evaluate the image as you would on your own computer as if you had the original file.  This feature has been very popular with our readers.  In the last article, we did on the Sony a9 we had 396,000 views of the images in the first 8 hours.  I hope you enjoy viewing the Fuji GFX files in this article at 100%.  I’ll have more to share in my in-depth review.

The Camera

The Fuji GFX is Fuji’s entry into what is commonly known as the medium format market.  Fuji makes a point to clarify this and say it is their camera for the “G” format. Semantics aside it is a camera with a sensor that is larger than the 35mm full frame sensors of many of today’s DSLRs.  You can read all the specs on the Fuji site or by clicking the links in this article.  I’ll cover them in more detail in the full review.  There’s a lot to like about the GFX.  If you are familiar with the Fuji X cameras, you’ll feel right at home with the GFX.  The camera feels good in your hands.  It’s not too heavy and feels pretty well balanced with the lenses that I was using.

My goal on the Sunday drive was shoot everything handheld and to see how the images looked at various ISOs.  In the process, I also wanted to get a feel for the dynamic range capabilities of the camera.  The GFX has a Sony sensor and it is most likely the same as the Pentax and Hasselblad X1D, so I expected to see similar performance.  I also wanted to see how the Auto-focus worked as well as the exposure metering.

I’ll sum up my initial feelings at the end of this article.  I can tell you though I was really impressed, especially with the image quality and the ability to do handheld images at low shutter speeds with such a big camera.

The Trip

I thought it would be fun to visit a beautiful Indiana location, Cataract Falls.  So, we set the GPS and set off for the falls.  In just about 80 minutes we arrived at the falls only to find there were no falls.  The area was completely flooded.  I’m talking major flooded and thus the falls were completely submerged and there was now a lake.  I know, I should have checked before I left.  We had a week of very heavy rain and I thought we would see the falls running fast and heavy.  That wasn’t the case.  On to plan B.  We took a number of images at the Cataract Falls Park and I did a Facetime Live video too with the Fuji GFX while there.  Then it was off to find covered bridges.

As you can see by the GPS tracking map we covered just under 250 miles in nearly 12 hours of driving with lots of stops.  I shot numerous images along the way and managed to check off everything I wanted to accomplish with the GFX camera.

I’m all about testing a camera by using it.  There are lots of technical sites that cover many technical aspects of cameras that in the end most photographers will never see or use.  I’m not concerned with micro-lens placement, cover glass thickness and all the things that make a camera work.  I enjoy reading about these aspects of a camera but for me, it’s how the camera feels in my hands, does it work as expected and more than anything else – does it produce the kind of images I expect? I look at the ergonomics, speed, battery life, capture speed and of course the lenses – just to name a few.  I don’t want a camera to get in the way of my picture taking.  I like to have fun capturing images and enjoy working on the images to make prints once I am home.

Spoiler alert . . . . I am really liking the GFX.  It’s a fun camera to shoot with and offers numerous features that make taking pictures enjoyable.  The horizontal and vertical tilts screen is a big one that is at the top of the list.  As I mentioned I’ll cover much of that in my review coming up.

The ability to have a proper exposure and recover detail in the shadows is a big plus for the kind of photography I do.  Judge for yourself if the detail recovered works for you.  Simply click on the images above.

My wife Debra volunteered for this shot.  The before image shows the image as it was imported into Lightroom and the after shows the image with corrections.  Another reason why shooting RAW is the only way to go.  See details of this image below.

With very uneven and strange light, the GFX made the above shot simple. There is some noise and grain.  I used no noise reduction in post processing,  personally, I like the feel of this image.  It was nice to be able to shoot at ISO 6400 handheld for a shot like this.

The refrigerator inside the General Store.  Not a lot to offer as far as food. This is the before shot and the image below shows the kind of detail that can be recovered using Lightroom. The sharpness shooting handheld is super nice and with no stabilization at all.  The lower image shows some noise pattern and I believe I could remove it but may also degrade the sharpness.  I’ll be revisiting this image in the full review.

The above image is another example that surprised me.  Once again, handheld and a slow shutter speed.  The only thing I did differently on this image is to activate the 2-second self-timer.  My elbows were braced on a desk to avoid any movement when pushing the shutter release.  As you can see it worked great.  In Lightroom I went to 4:1 and I can read even the smallest print of the book in the center of the image.  The use of the joystick on the back of the camera allowed me to put the AF spot exactly where I wanted it and the AF was dead on.

I have heard some other writers say the AF is not very good with the GFX.  I didn’t have one out of focus shot since I started shooting with the camera.  Sometimes the AF searches a bit in low light but once it finds the spot, it is sharp.  The 120mm Macro is extremely sharp and with Image Stabilization, in the lens, it allows for some great results.

I couldn’t help myself when I saw peeling paint.  Notice the cobweb in the center of the image.  I shot at a low angle using the flip out vertical rear screen.

The image above was the most fun to shoot.  It’s not uncommon on our trips to bump into and meet interesting people.  This gentleman bought an old mill and restored it.  We had a marvellous time talking to him and learning about his life and the restoration of the mill.  I asked if I could take his portrait.  Normally I would have used a tripod and made sure I was able to get a shot without camera movement.  But, the Fuji GFX allowed me to shoot in low light, with a higher ISO and with the great dynamic range I was able to also have good shadow detail and no blown highlight (except the big hanging lamp).  This image was made with the available light, handheld.  I was very pleased when I saw this image in Lightroom.

Camera Comparison

Ok, I couldn’t help myself. As many of you know I own a number of camera systems.  One of them is a complete Sony system with a large inventory of lenses.  While shooting the Fuji GFX on this little adventure I also on a few occasions shot with the Sony a7r II.  There is only 8 megapixels difference between the two cameras, so I expected the image quality to be pretty close.  In the end, the results are really close.  The other day I asked Chris Sanderson to look at the files I show below.  He was using Photoshop and he could not tell one file apart even when at 200 plus percent.  The differences are very small.

I don’t want to open up a huge debate on the merits of either of these cameras. I do however want to point out that there are choices and a lot depends on the type of work you are doing.  The images below have some differences in color and such but I believe I could work the files to be a pretty close match.  I did do some shadow detail recovery on the images of the mill.  It was very contrasty light I was shooting under as you can tell by the blue sky.  Zoom into the center of the image between the bridge and the building.  Also, look at the shadow side of the mill and the detail there.

I’ll have more to say about this in my review.  There are numerous choices for high megapixel cameras today.  It’s pretty exciting times if you are looking for a camera capable of capturing detail.  In the end though, it is about what are you going to be shooting.  Do you need 50 or more megapixels?  Personally, I like the megapixels and I like to print big and see what could be called micro-detail.  The true performance of these types of cameras can truly be appreciated when you see a print.  I will be making a number of prints as part of my overall review and do some blind tests with photographer friends to get their opinions.  For now, the results are pretty close.

Summing It All Up

This is not the review of the GFX.  However it is a good chance to take a close look at images made during a one-day outing with the GFX.

I own a lot of cameras and love shooting with all of them.  Yes, I am somewhat partial these days to Fuji and Sony.  I own a complete Olympus system too.  I also have been in the business—as many of you know—in regards to medium format cameras and high megapixel images.  I have shot with 100-megapixel cameras and truly that is an experience in and of itself.  It’s nice to see that there are new cameras and cameras of the caliber of the Fuji GFX and even the Hasselblad X1D.  There are real choices and all of these choices are good.  I think Fuji has done a super job with the GFX.  It feels good in my hands, shoots well and delivers amazing images.   It’s also a lot of fun to shoot with.  I love the F-Stop ring and dials on top.  It’s easy to set up and use.  I don’t get lost in the menus.  There was a lot of thought that went into making this a great camera and it will only get better.  Fuji is famous for firmware upgrades.  Sometimes the firmware upgrades offer so much, it’s like getting a whole new camera.  There is also no question that higher megapixel sensors will be arriving in the next year.  Fuji will also be adding more lenses.  One of the things that Fuji lacks—and it is old news—is a leaf shutter lens with high flash sync speeds.   For the kind of shooting I do, it doesn’t affect me, but it will be a major concern for studio shooters.

I have a lot of notes on this camera and I’ll be getting them together along with some other images and doing a real review very soon.  For now, I wanted to share these images with you and let you have a chance to experience the files from my Sunday with the GFX.  The bottom line is I had a fun day shooting.  The GFX didn’t get in my way – it just made taking pictures fun.  I had quality time with my wife.  And, on the way home, we stopped at the Beef Hosue Resturant and had a great dinner.
