Off The Grid

I am in Ushuaia, Argentina, preparing to board the Sea Spirit for a nine-day trip to Antarctica.  This will be my 25th trip to Antarctica.  It’s truly my happy place.  Debra and I got married in Antarctica, and she has accompanied me on two journeys.  I am a total Antarctica junky.  I have literally thousands of incredible images from this continent.

You never know what you will find. Great panos like this are possible.

I am doing this trip on the Sea Spirit with Muench Workshops.  There are only 46 photographers on this trip, and we have the whole ship.  It will be amazing doing this journey with a small group.  There are a number of other instructors with me.  You can read all about the trip on our WORKSHOP PAGE.  If you like what you see, we will do another trip in February 2025. Details on this trip will be announced soon. I came down here a few days early with great intentions of getting some work done.  However, that just couldn’t be accomplished at hotels with internet speeds of 3-5 mps.

When I first started exploring Antarctica, the ships we used did a lot of rocking and rolling.

So, you will have to be patient for my return for the articles.  I have two articles on the studio and my office workspace.  In addition, I’ll share how I packed and what I took to Antarctica.  I also have completed, and it will be ready to publish a video interview with Joe Cornish.  Joe is one of the finest landscape photographers I know, and he has a great story to share. I’ll be back on December 13.

I also had to travel from hell to get here, and I look forward to sharing that with you.  I have posted it on Facebook if you follow me there.

So please be patient, and I’ll get caught up when I am home.  I am pretty sure you can count on seeing a new set of Antarctica images.

On this trip, I will cross the Drake instead of flying over.  This is where you earn your Antarctica Penguin wings.  The Drake can be some of the roughest waters in the world.  It’s the one stretch of ocean in the world where there is no landmass to stop or slow down ocean currents.  You can have what is fondly called the Drake Lake or the Drake Shake. All indications from predictions are that our journey over will be a bit on the shake side.  I have never been bothered by rough seas, but I assure you I won’t be cocky and take chances.  I’ll patch up (with a seasick patch behind the ear) on my return.  When I return, I’ll be around for a while, and I have lots of other news to share.  Exciting times!

See you when I get back.

Photography is my passion and has been for 45 plus years. My career in photography has allowed me to travel the world, meet some of the most interesting people on the planet and see things I could never have dreamed of. My goal is to share the passion of pictures taking through photographs and teaching with as many people as I can hoping it brings them as much joy and happiness as it has me. I do this through Rockhopper Workshops and other projects as well as teaching at my Gallery in Indianapolis.
