East Greenland and The Mighty Fjords Around Sermilik

For years I have been doing visits to East Greenland in a beautiful area called Scoresby Sound.  These trips have always been full of incredible photography and magnificent landscapes.  The icebergs were always something special as they were some of the largest I have ever seen.  As with many places like this tourism has become rampant.  It used to be we could sail the fjords there and not see other ships.  This has changed though, just like Iceland has changed with all its tourists.  This being what is is the Greenland government has put in some new regulations that limit tour operators in Scoresby Sound.

In an effort to protect the Narwhal whales they have closed a number of fjords to traffic all together and also put in a speed limitation to practically the whole sound of a maximum of five knots.  As you can imagine this would seriously jeopardize our ability to deliver a great photography experience.  It’s kind of funny as for all the years I have been visiting Scoresby Sound I have only seen one Narwhal whale.

Six Berths Left

A New Plan – August 13-22, 2024

We have found a new set of fjords to visit without the restrictions that in our opinion actually offers more opportunities for great images.  It’s also an area that has been visited before and the means we will return with some images not seen before.  There are also a lot more possibilities for interesting landings.

We will now be visiting the The Sermilik Fjord System. This area is an unexplored Greenland, offering a ton of giant icebergs, whale watching, an exciting and different Inuit culture with many communities that will welcome us. Add on top of that the many photographic opportunities that we will be exposed to during this trip.

We will be doing all this on the M/S Balto and luxury Expedition ship with just twelve passengers.  Six spots already booked, so don’t hesitate to get onboard this trip.  I am super excited to do this trip and go someplace new and different.  Based on my briefings, we will see a lot more than in Scoresby and have a chance to come home with a wider variety of great images.

All information about this photo expedition can be found at the Rockhopper Workshops webpage.  The page has a lot of detail, photos and two videos.  And, if you have questions my contact information where you can call me directly.

Photography is my passion and has been for 45 plus years. My career in photography has allowed me to travel the world, meet some of the most interesting people on the planet and see things I could never have dreamed of. My goal is to share the passion of pictures taking through photographs and teaching with as many people as I can hoping it brings them as much joy and happiness as it has me. I do this through Rockhopper Workshops and other projects as well as teaching at my Gallery in Indianapolis.
