Over the past twenty years, I have developed a strong fondness for rusty objects. Despite my friends’ concerns, I find myself drawn to photographing rust. I have encountered no downsides to this hobby, except for the occasional tetanus shot resulting from unexpected encounters with rusty surfaces.
I am a busy photographer who runs websites, leads workshops, and teaches at my studio. I am fortunate to be an Artist In Residence at the beautiful Indianapolis Art Center, where I specialize in Fine Art Printing and conduct four-day workshops throughout the year. When not there, I travel around the world.

Much of my photography is geared towards various projects I am working on. Brooks Jensen, Lenswork magazine, and Art Wolfe, who have all worked on multi-year book projects, inspired me to shoot for specific projects. Consequently, when I travel, I look for subjects that can contribute to these ongoing projects. One such project involves capturing images of rust from different parts of the world.

My fascination with rust began in an old car junkyard and was further fueled during a trip to Antarctica. I was surprised to find evidence of human activity in such pristine environments, including old vehicles, whaling stations, rusty boats, and machinery. I started photographing these rusty objects, capturing them like postcards and then exploring abstract and unique shapes within them.
I’ve realized that rusty things are all around us, which inspired me to start my rust project. I’ve traveled extensively, collecting over 10,000 images of rust from various locations. It took some time to narrow this collection to a more manageable size, but it’s still just a fraction of what’s out there.

I love so many things about rust—the textures, the different colors, the peeling layers, and the unique patterns that nature creates as it ages. Sometimes, plants even begin to grow on these rusty remnants.
