It has been non-stop since Monday. We are beginning our last day today. For the last three and a half days, we have covered hundreds of miles and had the chance to photograph a ton of different landscapes. The Palouse is dynamic this time of year. It’s harvest time, and everything is golden. We have had incredible skies with beautiful clouds.
Why I call the Palouse dynamic is that it can change from morning to afternoon. Fields are being harvested by giant combines all performing their own ballet. The combines cut row upon row of wheat across gentle hillsides. They then unload the grain into trucks that then take off for the grain elevators. This goes on all day long. It’s incredible how fast these machines and men can clear off hundreds of acres.
While we enjoyed photographing the machines at work, we also enjoyed finding the abstracts in the landscape and contrasts between fields of wheat and fields already plowed under ready for the next crop. Add to this barns, abandoned houses and old trucks and cars, and there is more than enough opportunities to keep a photographer very busy.
Please enjoy a few photos from this workshop. I will write a more detailed article after I return home and can work my images more. I have been photographing in the Palouse for many years, and I always find something new. This is a very photo-rich area. Enjoy!
