We are back again with a new Photo Chat on April 24, 2024, at 2 PM (EST). This chat will be with our good friend Dan Steinhardt, also known as Dano to many of us in the industry.  I have known Dano for years and consider him a good friend.  Dano will share with us the personal work he has produced over the years as he has traveled the world on behalf of Epson.  Dano advocates for every photographer with a passion for printing their work.

While known in the industry for his marketing roles and award-winning video productions, many are unaware of Dano’s background as a photographer and his work, Between Meetings.  Dano was fortunate to have studied under the legendary Warren King at Reseda High in Los Angeles, CA. He was recognized for his photography skills when Scholastic Magazine awarded him the Grand Prize as the best high school photographer in North America. While still in high school, Dano was assisting professional photographers in Hollywood, CA, and that experience, combined with his work at Reseda, enabled him to graduate from Brooks Institute with honors at the age of 20.

Dano operated his own commercial studio in Chicago for eight years, specializing in advertising photography.  During this time, he worked in large format table-top product and food photography and was voted by American Photographer Magazine as “A new face in advertising photography”.  Dano went on to pursue opportunities on the business side of photography, first representing Eastman Kodak in the New York City Photo District, then moving into strategic marketing positions with Kodak at its headquarters in Rochester, NY.  In 2001, Dano joined Epson America, Inc. as its Professional Imaging Marketing Manager, assuming the responsibility of positioning Epson as a key player in the photographic industry in professional and amateur photo markets. His responsibilities at Epson expanded into video production and other imaging markets, including projection.  Dano’s background in color science enabled him to represent Epson’s LCD worldwide projection team, and he has participated as an expert on international standards bodies, including the International Electrotechnical Commission (IEC) and the International Committee of Display Metrology (ICDM).

Dano has a bachelor’s degree with honors from Brooks Institute of Photography, Santa Barbara, CA.  He has completed additional studies in the business schools of Harvard University, Cambridge, MA, the University of Virginia, Charlottesville, VA, and the University of Michigan, Ann Arbor, MI.

Drawing inspiration from the world’s best photographers, many of whom he has the honor to work with, Dano rediscovered his passion for photography.  Taking advice from his mentor Jay Maisel, “Carry the camera because without it it’s tough to take pictures”, Dano finds the extraordinary in the ordinary, carrying his camera and capturing images between meetings at Epson.

As with all our Photo Chats this presentation will be recorded and published on photoPXL and YouTube soon after the presentation.

Photography is my passion and has been for 45 plus years. My career in photography has allowed me to travel the world, meet some of the most interesting people on the planet and see things I could never have dreamed of. My goal is to share the passion of pictures taking through photographs and teaching with as many people as I can hoping it brings them as much joy and happiness as it has me. I do this through Rockhopper Workshops and other projects as well as teaching at my Gallery in Indianapolis.
