He pursued fine arts at Ohio Northern University, then graduated from Bowling Green State University (BGSU) in 1976, where he earned a BA degree, specializing in graphic design and fine art photography. Professional Journey

Bell’s professional career began in a commercial photo studio in Toledo, Ohio, where he honed his skills and attention to detail. He then transitioned to WBGU-PBS, BGSU’s PBS affiliate, serving as art director for over three decades. In this role, Bell not only refined his artistic vision but also mentored students, providing them with practical experience in the field.

Around the year 2000, Bell rekindled his passion for photography, embarking on numerous expeditions into the wilderness. These solitary journeys allowed him to immerse himself fully in the landscapes he sought to capture. Bell’s preference for overcast days and long exposure techniques lends his photographs an ethereal quality, stripping away the distractions of color to focus on composition, texture, and form. This approach encourages viewers to engage with the essence of the subject, fostering a meditative experience.

Accolades and Publications

Bell’s dedication to his craft has garnered significant recognition. Notably, his photograph “Agave” won the grand prize in the Ansel Adams Photo Competition, a testament to his ability to capture the intricate beauty of natural forms. His work has been exhibited in numerous galleries across the United States and featured in various fine art photography magazines.

In 2021, Bell published “Quiet Contemplation,” a hardcover book showcasing approximately 100 of his black-and-white images. The limited-edition book reflects his aesthetic philosophy—a Zen-like vision of the natural world—and serves as a culmination of his artistic journey. The high-quality printing ensures that the photographs closely approximate his original prints, offering readers an intimate glimpse into his contemplative perspective.

Personal Resilience

In 2016, shortly after a 12-week photographic expedition in the Pacific Northwest, Bell was diagnosed with multiple myeloma, a form of blood cancer that robs one’s bones of calcium until it’s brought into remission. During that period, he lost 4″ in height due to compression of several vertebrae. This type of cancer will relapse. He’s been very fortunate to have such a long period of time in remission. He’s taken an immunomodulatory drug for the past seven years that costs $14,000 every three weeks.

His diagnosis prompted a reevaluation of his priorities, leading him to expedite the publication of his portfolio book and the initiation of photography workshops. Despite undergoing extensive treatment, including over 100 rounds of chemotherapy and radiation, Bell’s passion for photography remained undiminished. He continues to lead annual workshops at Rock Island Lodge near Lake Superior Provincial Park, Ontario, Canada, sharing his knowledge and inspiring others to connect deeply with the natural world.
