The Leica M11: A gorgeous camera you may never actually use.

By: Jon Swindall

When you think of Leica, you think precision, style, and a deep connection to photographic history. Their latest release, the Leica M11 in glossy black, is a masterclass in marrying tradition with modernity. This isn’t just a camera; it’s a statement, a piece of functional art that ages with you while delivering cutting-edge performance.

What Makes the Leica M11 Glossy Black Special?

  • Design: The M11’s brass body with a glossy black paint finish creates a patina over time, showcasing its unique journey. This is the camera equivalent of a well-loved leather jacket.
  • Vintage Inspiration: The engraved Leica logo and silver-chrome shutter release harken back to the classic Leica M3, blending nostalgia with sleek modernity.
  • Performance: Inside, it retains the advanced tech of the standard M11— a 60MP BSI CMOS sensor, Triple Resolution Technology, 64GB internal storage, and support for UHS-II SD cards.

There’s been some discussion in the community about the glossy finish and brass construction. The patina it develops will make every camera unique, but some might find wear-and-tear more noticeable compared to matte finishes. Similarly, the brass top plate adds a touch of elegance but also a bit of heft. Still, these are small trade-offs for a camera that blends timeless design with top-tier performance.

Much like buying designer jeans that look lived-in —deliberately cool, this camera is vintage fashion for photographers.

Paired with the Noctilux-M 50mm f/1.2 ASPH lens, also finished in glossy black, this combination is supposed to be the ideal celebration of Leica’s 70th M-System anniversary.

But owning one doesn’t come cheap—$13,700 for the camera and $12,100 for the lens.

Leica’s Business Resurgence

While Leica’s cameras are legendary, the company’s story isn’t just about gear. Leica reported record-breaking revenue of €554 million in the 2023–2024 fiscal year, a 14% increase from the previous year. What’s behind this surge?

  1. Product Line Success: Models like the Leica Q3 have been pivotal, driving growth worldwide, especially in Asia, where sales jumped by 25%.
  2. Expanding Retail Presence: Leica opened flagship stores in global hotspots like Paris, Mexico City, and New York, bringing their brand closer to customers.

Mobile Innovation: Their mobile imaging partnerships, including the development of Leica LUX photo editing apps, have been crucial in tapping into the smartphone market.

Why Leica’s Approach Works

Leica’s strategy isn’t just about selling cameras; it’s about selling an experience. The glossy black M11 reflects this ethos, designed not just for taking photos but for fostering a personal connection. The patina it develops ensures every camera is as unique as its owner.

Their business growth stems from diversifying their portfolio and blending heritage with modernity. Whether through collectible cameras, innovations in mobile imaging, or flagship stores, Leica remains relevant in a market dominated by high-tech competitors.

Is the Leica M11 Worth It?

If you value craftsmanship, history, and the tactile feel of a camera designed for longevity, the M11 is hard to beat. But it’s not for everyone—this is a luxury item as much as it is a photographic tool. For $13,700, it better be.

An update from LuLa member Robert Smith, “I just sold my Fujifilm XT-3 and purchased an M11-P. (The glossy black price makes me feel that I got a deal.) I’m in love with the camera. The UI takes some study, but it is sensible and very usable. (The Fujifilm UI was always a challenge). The Leica dynamic range is huge, enabling both low light and action (with small f stops). I added the EVF and Nikon lens adapter. The EVF eliminates the annoying frames when using the camera viewfinder.  I can also use my long Nikon (but only wide open unless there is an f stop ring on the lens barrel). I couldn’t be happier.”
