I love books and especially photography books. I have an extensive collection of fine photography books that grows every week. I read a lot and love good novels and literature. I must admit though I haven’t purchased a hard copy of a books like this for years. I download my books and now have an extensive library on my iPad. Using my regular size iPad and an iPad mini I have my reading material with me where ever I am. And, no matter what device I use they are all synced so I can start a book on my iPad and continue it on my iPhone or iPad mini. Now, this is not what this article is about. It is though what many readers are doing. This article is about a very cool bookstore.
Recently while in Amsterdam I was out for a walk shooting on the streets as I usually do in cities I travel to. Just by chance I stumble upon a book store that was jammed with people. It looked an Apple store with wall to wall people. It was the Mendo Bookstore. I have been to many bookstores. I love bookstores like I love hardware stores and camera stores. But this bookstore was unlike anything I have ever seen. It was loaded to the gills with some of the finest and most beautiful photography and art books I have ever seen.
I spent over an hour in this place and I could have spent a day. The collection of books is unlike anything I have ever seen. The book are beautifully displayed on tables and on shelves and some are pure collector items and there are many signed editions. The giant edition and even the regular edition of Sebastião Salgado‘s Genesis was something to behold.
This is why I will not buy photography books to view electronically. You have to hold, touch and fell these books. Books like these are collectables and I know I will visit Mendo and will be ordering from Mendo in the future.
Upon browsing the Mendo web page I discovered you could save yourself a lot of time by hitting the buy all button. Keep in mind as you can see by the image above this is a store with a sense of humor.
