We get so caught up in today’s world of digital imaging that few of us can remember that on February 19,1990 the digital photography world changed when Photoshop was introduced. A few us pioneers were involved with digital imaging back then. It was a while before I saw Photoshop for the first time, I knew when I saw it that things were going to change. It would have been hard to imagine back then that Photoshop would grow and be a program used by millions and that it would be the cornerstone for changing photography as we know it today.
Back in the 90’s there were no consumer digital cameras as we know them today. There was no ink jet printers and very few computer systems that could offer the power needed to render much less retouch digital images. For many and even those of us involved in the industry it was hard to imagine that we would be doing what we are today with digital cameras much less Photoshop.

In the nineties we were scanning negatives and transparencies into a hybrid digital workflow.

Using very high powered CGI INDY workstation machines we would retouch and manipulate images like we never thought possible. We were using the same software as Hollywood movie studios. A typical workflow would be to scan a negative, retouch it and write a new negative (or transparency). The new negative would then be printed in a normal light and chemical (analog fashion).
Then we saw Photoshop and everything as we knew it changed.
Michael and I are close friends with Thomas Knoll, who with his brother John invented and introduced Photoshop 25 years ago today. We have both been involved with Photoshop from the early days and watched it mature over the years as it kept pace with computer hardware bringing us more power and exceptional creative tools. Two years ago Michael and I sat down with Thomas Knoll on a trip we made to Australia and Thomas shared with us the history of Photoshop. If you haven’t had the chance to see this video there is no better time than now to enjoy meeting the inventor of this program that has shaped the way we think of photography today.
