About the Workshop
F-8 And Be Thereworkshops and tours presents a mini-workshop in and around the colorful city of Sedona, Arizona from Thursday November 6, thru Monday November 10, 2003. We will be photographing and exploring some of the most exciting terrain in the Southwest. This trip is one of our most requested and popular. We will photograph color, light and weather from one of the most talked about and photographed locations in Arizona.
Southwest photographer Steve Kossack will lead this workshop. Its size and design will lend itself the flexibility to travel and photograph most of the available attractions in and around this Vortex city during our 5-day shoot.
Where is Sedona?
About 125 north of Phoenix, about 45 miles south of Flagstaff and about 50 miles northeast of Prescott. Sedona sits some 4,500 ft above sea level in the northern part of Arizona. The area is called “Red Rock Country”. It’s become famous for its color and formations. Some of these formations are believed to be Vortexes.
What is a Vortex?
Well, it’s said that a vortex is a place in nature where the earth is exceptionally alive and healthy. What doesn’t’t have to be said is the Sedona area is exceptionally beautiful. The vortexes include Bell Rock, Airport Mesa, Boynton Canyon and Cathedral Rocks.
•Red Rock Crossing:This is the Sedona classic. Most of the photographs of the area that you have seen are from here. With Oak Creek in the foreground, Cathedral Rocks is considered a Sedona landmark.
•Oak Creek Canyon.Just north of Sedona, Oak Creek is a year-round stream. Cascading down the cottonwood lined red rock canyon, this forest contains maples, oaks and sycamores. Some stretches of the stream have white water, while others, flat pools reflecting color.

This Workshop
This workshop is small by design. It will allow for ALL levels of photographic experience. There will be no lectures or product endorsements. Personal instruction will be available at all times. The opportunity to photograph and share with the group will always be present. Print discussions can be a part of each day, depending on time available. We will be photographing all the Vortexes and hiking while exploring some ruins. Our schedule will hinge on the weather and roads being accessible.
Weather, Equipment, Etc.
November in this enchanted region is unpredictable! Last November we experienced warm days and lingering fall color but we also had sunrises with temperatures in the 30’s!! This year we might have snow! Or Summer! We can only hope for lots of different and varied photographic situations.
You can do this trip with any format or type of gear. Digital or film. A tripod is of course a must.
The Schedule
You will need 5 days in all . Two of them are weekend days.
Thursday November 6, 2003— Arrive Phoenix, Arizona by mid afternoon. Transportation to all locations, including the return to Phoenix on Monday is provided. A sunset shoot if travel times permit.
Friday, November 7, 2003— Sunrise and A.M. shoot at Airport Mesa. Mid-day hike and shoot at Devil’s Bridge. Sunset at Red Rock Crossing.
Saturday, November 8, 2003— Sunrise overlooking Cathedral Rocks. Mid-day hiking and photographing West Fork Trail. Sunset in Oak Creek Canyon.
Sunday, November 9, 2003— Sunrise from the Oak Creek Canyon overlook. Midday descending Schnebly Hill Road. Late Afternoon hike and sunset on Doe Mountain.
Monday, November 10, 2003— A sunrise shoot of choice depending on departure times and the return drive to Phoenix.
Please Remember
November is a shoulder season. Hiking and exactly where we go will depend on road conditions. Presented above is our “dry and clear” plan. We will have ample location substitutes if our schedule is disrupted. There will be lots of shooting and field travel. The days will most likely begin well before sunrise and end well after sunset. Lots of film, cards, determination, smiles and stories will be needed (Rock & Roll trivia will be provided) 🙂
The Cost:
The cost of this trip is U.S. $1495. This includes all transportation to and from all shooting locations as well as pick up and drop off at Phoenix. You are responsible for your own travel arrangements to and from Phoenix. Your hotel accommodations are included (2 persons to a room).
Although we will most likely eat our meals together, sometimes a break is nice. Therefore, you will be responsible for the cost of your own meals. Bring your equipment & food money and we’ll take care of the rest.
A deposit of $750 will be required when you register. The remaining balance ($745) will be due no later than September 6, 2003; 60 days before the trip. If you need to cancel before September 6, 2003, a full refund (less $100) will be available. After September 6, 2002 a full refund (less $200) will be made, but only if a replacement for you can be found in time.
If we have to cancel the trip for any reason you will receive a full refund.
