For years, the zoom lens in the bag was a big, slow one.
Buy an APS-C camera, and it usually came with a small zoom that ran f/3.5 at the wide end and f/5.6 by the time you zoomed in. Great on a sunny day. A struggle at dusk, indoors, or any time you wanted a soft out of focus background.
Well, Tamron’s new 16-50mm F2.8 A goes after that lens. It’s about the size of a kit zoom, it holds f/2.8 the whole way through the barrel, and it’s coming to all four big APS-C mounts.
The first two ship October 29.
The Lens
On Sony, Nikon, and Fuji bodies, 16-50mm works out to about a 24-75mm in full-frame terms. On Canon RF, with its slightly smaller APS-C sensor, it’s about 25.6-80mm.
Quick refresher: a smaller sensor crops the image, so a lens frames tighter than it would on full frame. If you want the full story, we’ve got a deep dive on crop factor in the archives.
That 24-75mm range covers most of what people shoot day to day. Wide enough for a landscape or a room, long enough for a head-and-shoulders portrait.
Here’s the lens details, from Tamron’s announcement:
- 14 elements in 10 groups
- VXD linear motor for autofocus
- f2.8 all through the lens
- Focuses as close as 15cm (6 inches) at 16mm, for 1:4.5 magnification
- 7 rounded aperture blades
- 55mm filter thread
- Moisture-resistant build and a fluorine coating on the front element
- About 305 grams (315 on Nikon Z), and about 8 centimeters long
That close-focus number is a fun one. At 6 inches, you can fill the frame with a flower, a coffee cup, or the texture of an old camera body. That’s pretty cool.

Four Mounts, One Lens
Most fast APS-C zooms start on one system and trickle out to others. Tamron’s releasing all around the same time, according to Fstoppers:
- Sony E: $529, October 29
- Canon RF: $549, October 29
- Nikon Z: $549, November 19
- Fujifilm X: $529, December 17
For Canon RF and Nikon Z shooters, that’s a big deal. Those two mounts have had fewer third-party APS-C options, and a fast standard zoom is the lens most useful for people.

What Early Reviews Say
Digital Camera World spent a weekend with the lens on a Sony A6700. The reviewer said it looks small enough to be a kit lens, and found it sharp with pleasing bokeh and attractive flare.
A few trade-offs came up:
- Barrel distortion at both ends and some vignetting at 50mm, which a lens profile corrects
- Minor purple fringing in high-contrast, backlit scenes
- The controls are a focus ring and a zoom ring, so aperture lives on the camera dial
- Stabilization comes from your camera body, so check that yours has it
- The lens extends as you zoom in
The lens has a USB-C port for firmware updates through Tamron’s app. And the reviewer gave it a spray from a plant mister, and it kept working.

How It Stacks Up
- Sigma 18-50mm f/2.8 DC DN: a touch lighter, but it starts at 18mm, so you give up some wide angle. It’s also missing on Nikon Z
- Tamron 17-70mm f/2.8: more reach and built-in stabilization, in a bigger, heavier package
- Sony 16-55mm f/2.8 G and Fujifilm 16-55mm f/2.8 R LM WR II: heavier and pricier, with the Fuji adding an aperture ring
Who It’s For
If you shoot APS-C and you’re still using the kit zoom, this is the upgrade to look at first at a good price.
You get about a stop and a half more light at 50mm, real background blur for portraits, and a lens light enough to leave on the camera all day.
It’s a travel lens, a family lens, a walk-around lens. And at around $530 to $550, that’s a good value.
Now, the zoom lens in the bag is fast and lightweight.
